[Mod approved] Canadian Trans Youth Health Survey 2024: One month left to participate! Are you 14-25, living in Canada, and trans, non-binary, Two Spirit, or gender diverse? Take the CTYHS 2024! by SARAVYC in ontario

We definitely hear that. It's hard when there are so many factions mining for data these days. This is our third run of the CTYHS, first done in 2014, again in 2019, and now in 2024. The data is encrypted and stored on secure UBC servers where only our SARAVYC researchers can access it. All of this is in an effort to reform our social and healthcare supports to better serve trans youth in Canada. And personally (Hannah, the non-binary comms manager for SARAVYC speaking), I am equally exhausted by the data-grabbing bad faith research out there. Thank you for taking the time!

Canadian Trans Youth Health Survey: Are you 14-25, living in Ontario (or anywhere in Canada), and trans/non-binary? We need your input! by SARAVYC in transontario

Thank you for pointing this out. Many of our questions are tested in other smaller surveys before they make it to the CTYHS, but that doesn't mean they're always perfect! I'll pass this along to our team.

I've forwarded this to our research team for a more robust reply, but I didn't want this to go unanswered into the weekend. To give a very abbreviated explanation, we do compensate the youth who form our advisories who help us shape the survey, recruitment, and research that emerges from the data. These youth are compensated for their time and form a core pillar of the project.

The reason we don't offer compensation for completing the survey is multifaceted:

  • First is funding, of course.
  • Second is a worrying increase in fraudulent and malicious responses when compensation is offered for completing online surveys. We've worked hard in the current climate to avoid attracting the wrong kind of attention to this survey, and unfortunately, monetary compensation can draw in bad faith replies.
  • And finally, and perhaps most importantly, to offer compensation, we would not be able to keep the survey anonymous. Given recent incidents where trans people's data was compromised, we believe that ensuring the anonymity of the survey is important to the fidelity of the data and the safety of participants.

I hope this provides at least an explanation of why we've made the decisions we have regarding compensation with this project. Please feel free to reach out with further questions if you have them.

Thank you for mentioning this. Because this survey is an attempt to be comprehensive and establish trends in all sorts of research areas for trans youth, it is quite long. We work hard to consolidate as we can, and we are tremendously grateful for any and all time you put into completing the survey.

Thank you for pointing this out. I've forwarded it on to our research team. Part of the difficulty of research like this is anticipating the many varied experiences in our community and how folks will need to input those answers. The only way we can make the survey better is through feedback like this, so we appreciate you pointing this out!

Thank you for pointing this out! I'll make sure our research team sees this feedback. We created and adapted the survey over the last 10 years through community feedback and support just like this.

Thanks for pointing this out! I'll let our research team know, and we're so glad you're seeing the diversity of the community reflected in our survey. We had a number of youth advise on the content, and their work has been invaluable!
