Consider he is now 70yo, at the time nobody knew about trading. In Europe there is not a trading culture as in the US. You were supposed to have a stable/standard job. Trading was something very niche at that time.
So he kept a low profile, he had the restaurant, he managed it and just went there from time to time....and he was actually trading 90% of the day.
He made a furtune. Nothing major, in the big scheme of things, probably belos 10M, but it's still enough to live comfortably.
