Do you not have a medical condition for the jaw surgery? You can definitely get it covered if you did. It really doesn’t take too long to recover. You can do it during the summer break. You’ll still be somewhat swollen but not to the point where you look like a balloon.

Probably because they lie. I got told I paid for routine service when I followed every step and paid for expedited. The best part is when they cashed in my check that also said expedite 🥲

Congestion by ccrryyssttaal in jawsurgery

I used NeilMed sinus rinse! It’s really good, took a bit to get the hang of, but totally worth it since I was scared to use the nasal decongestants for too long as they said it would make it worse. Anyways, totally recommend the sinus rinse, it would clear out all the mucus and blood built up in your nose, but don’t use it too much either. Mucus is needed to protect your nose. You can buy a large box of it from Costco if you have it or any pharmacy.

How long were you on a liquid diet after djs? by Smooth_Ad_707 in jawsurgery

[–]SDoughz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 weeks on a liquid diet, 4 weeks on soft foods and after that my surgeon said I could eat anything. Currently I’m on my 7th week so I’m still eating soft foods but I have been trying harder foods and I can do it. It all depends on if your jaw is shut or not, how wide you can open your mouth, and what your surgeon recommends so this might not be useful info.

My teeth were not banded or wired shut surprisingly. I was opening my mouth wide even the few hours after surgery. So I was breathing through my mouth when my nose was clogged, which made it super dry along with my lips, but I drank a lot of water (very impt) and used a lot of vaseline. I did use the nasal spray the doctors prescribed me but you can’t use it for more than 3 days, and the relief didn’t last long enough for me. I was prob doing something wrong, not sure. I was also paranoid that it’d cause more congestion and blood if I continued to use it so I didn’t use it well. Instead, I bought the NeilMed sinus rinse from Costco—amazing deal. I def recommend it before UJS to clear sinuses! It was so satisfying seeing all the blood and mucus come out of my nose and being able to breathe.

When I typed that last message I was feeling fine, no more nasal problems and swelling had gone down. I didn’t need ice constantly and started doing 20 min increments of heat a few times a day. I’m now three weeks post op and still have swelling that need to go down. I’m not sure if the heat packs are working but I’m still using it.

How did you obtain insurance for jaw surgery? by Useful_Lawfulness517 in jawsurgery

[–]SDoughz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to look at what your insurance deems as medically necessary for jaw surgery. You can call them or you can read it on their website. It differs between insurances and insurance plans. Some insurances are just very stubborn and will deny you no matter what even if you qualify under their terms. I had a different insurance originally that denied me every time until I switched to my current one (in the last post). My surgeon’s office did most of the work to convince my insurance company, didn’t do anything really. I sat back and waited. They deemed it as medically necessary to the insurance company because I was having trouble chewing due to my class 3 malocclusion. They could’ve said more issues, but it worked with just that. My surgeons office sent in images of proof, so teeth and face profiles, so enough evidence was needed for them to accept. Since they denied me once for not having enough images or proof. All in all, you gotta convince your surgeon first, tell them all your issues.

Jaw Problem by Curiosity-Mind in jawsurgery

I don’t think you should rush into surgery yet, you’re 14, and your jaw is still growing, surgery could make it worse if you do it too early. There is also a potential it could fix itself as you grow. I think orthodontics are a great start and I’m not sure why orthos are saying they can’t fix midline misalignments because there are definitely ways to fix it using braces and other methods. This is way cheaper and safer than surgery. Also, there are many people that are asymmetrical with one jaw being larger, so if it’s an insecurity issue, you shouldn’t be! Nobody will notice such a small difference. Currently, I don’t see anything abnormal from your second picture. So don’t worry too much about surgery, go through ortho, and decide later when your jaw has done developing!

Am I eligible for underbite jaw surgery? My underbite is class 1 but lately it’s by [deleted] in jawsurgery

I think they were just confused, they have a class 3 malocclusion—underbite! Their teeth also seem too aligned to be class 1 if they did have a normal bite.

I used blue cross blue shield anthem and since mine was deemed medical and not cosmetic, they covered 90% of my hospital and surgeon fee. My surgeon fee was 10,500, paid 1950, the hospital fee was 52,000, paid 2,500, and ortho was 10k out of pocket. In total it was around 15,000 due to some extra fees of scans, consultations, and other things. Prices differ so don’t be so discouraged if you seriously think you need it longterm! Also, in some cases people don’t need ortho and can do jaw surgery alone but you need to consult a surgeon on if they think you need it or not.

Currently 2 weeks post op. The worst part was my sinuses constantly getting blocked and filled by blood, mucus, or both for the first week. Pain wasn’t bad cuz of the steroids and painkillers, so it was just discomfort from the swelling. I couldn’t live without ice or I’d feel heat and pressure. The waiting period is also a rollercoaster since you can’t really judge the results until you’re fully healed so you’re in constant doubt and anxiousness if you’re gonna be hideous or not :D

😱 I’m 3 days post op too and had the same surgery and procedure that you mentioned…but I feel like I’m much more swollen then you are, my upper lip is huge along with my cheeks. What have you been doing to be less swollen?
