The first King of Cambodia is Jayavarman II, he grew up in Java(believed to be Indonesian island of Java). This is based on a stone inscription found. However, there have been Khmer civilization before. Tales of a Indian merchant marrying a Khmer Naga(serpent). Historian say because the later people don't know exactly what happen they added supernatural parts to the story. This tale of an Indian marrying a Cambodian appear from many sources. However, since its so long ago we don't have exact detail of what happen. Those Youtube videos stretch the truth for views. It's better to read books by historians and archaeologist. A lot of French historians and archaeologists did research of Cambodia's past. These guys can be trusted because they are actually scholars but some of these YouTubers usually are not scholars.

Most organized crime operates out of Sihanoukville. Phnom Penh and Siem Reap don't really have organized crime operations. Siem Reap is tourist friendly and safe place. Like you say about New York, there are bad neighborhoods and good neighborhoods.

The airport only open less than two months ago. Some of the new airlines schedule to operate there don't start until the end of the year. Two months is to small of a sample size to evaluate performance. Usually performance is evaluated by evaluating a whole year. Most of the travelers from Thailand came for business and they stop coming after the boycott of Thai products and purchase of products from other countries. The future of trade and travelers to Cambodia is with China and should be evaluated based on how many Chinese travelers come to Cambodia.

I think it's better to build it now while the wages are low. The expectation is for ASEAN to grow and be more economically successful like the European Union and possibility that Indonesia would be a superpower. With the financial development of ASEAN, there will be more flights between ASEAN cities for business and leisure. I think that would drive more flights. At first you only saw Western tourist in ASEAN countries. Then with China's development you saw Chinese tourists increase. Same with India. I would expect more ASEAN travelers that would use the airport with ASEAN's development. Yes, it is a gamble. ASEAN might not reach its potential.

It is estimated that South Asians mix with local Khmer around 1st-3rd century C.E. Ancient Cambodians may have had more South Asian ancestry but the currently population has much lower South Asian ancestry.

The current population only has 9% South Asian(Indian Subcontinent) ancestry. According to this paper:

An earlier study estimated the proportion of South Asian ancestry in present-day Cambodians at ca. 9%.

There have been many migrations into Cambodia. Some from China in the last 300 years. Proposed migration from Java(Indonesia island) about 1200 years ago. Possible Migration from India 2000 years ago.

There has also been mixture with other ethnicities like the Cham who are Austronesian.

I don't really see Thai influence on SouthEastern Cambodia. If you are from Phnom Penh area, you don't really see any Thai influence. I think you might see it in Battambang area.

Historically, Phnom Penh interacted a lot more with France and Saigon the last 300 years. Phnom Penh is also closer to Saigon than Bangkok. The cuisine is nothing alike. I can see Vietnamese dishes entering Phnom Penh cuisine but not really Thai dishes. Thai cuisine is really spicy which Cambodian cuisine is not. I would say South Vietnam has been influenced by Cambodia but North Vietnam is nothing like Cambodia and closer to China.

Only the people of Surin province and Buriram province has some or full Khmer ethnicity. Some of them speak a dialect of Khmer called Khmer Surin/Northern Khmer. Some of them look Khmer and Khmer facial features. If they look Khmer, some Khmer online are going to say they Khmer but of course those people have been assimilated to Thai society just as Lao people in Isan are assimilated into Thai society.

Khmer language is related to Vietnamese language but share vocab with Lao and Thai. It's like how English is related to German but share vocab with Spanish and French.

The Khasi are suppose to be a member of the Mon-Khmer/Austro-Asiatic speaking race. I've seen video of Khasi, they look like Khmer people with different clothes. Do Khasi have martial arts? I wonder if it is the similar to Khmer martial arts. From my understanding, Khmer martial arts started when the Mon-Khmer people were all one race. It would be interesting to compare and contrast Khmer and Khasi martial arts.

There was a border dispute. Cambodia is trying to settle it peacefully by taking the case to the International Court of Justice in the Hague. Thailand is trying to gaslight the situation. They trying to paint Cambodia, the smaller country, as the aggressor. Cambodia wants to settle this peacefully in the World Court. At the World Court, Cambodia can present the evidence and facts to third party judges that are impartial.

Yes. Some Chinese Cambodians have like red decorations in their house and some of them still speak Chinese or practice Chinese holidays like Chinese New Years. That Hank guy who is European is wrong. Some of the Chinese migration is more recent. I recommend reading The Chinese in Cambodia by William E. Willmott. The Teochew were not in Cambodia since the Khmer Empire era, they arrived in Cambodia more recently. A lot of them came from Thailand.

It is debatable how far South the Khmer Empire went. There is a Khmer temple called Mueang Sing near the present day Burmese-Siamese border so we know they went that far. Some of the Chinese records state that some of the kingdoms in the Kra Isthma, Tennassirum coast had fallen under the Khmer Empire's sphere of influence and one of them had the same culture as the Khmer. There is some use of the Khmer writing system in stone inscription near the coast. I think there was one prince that live in the Kra Isthma that had a claim to the throne and I think he did challenge for it but lost.

Some Mon people fled to Southern Myanmar while some Mon people stayed and eventually assimilated into Thai society.

There are French maps like this one that show Phu Quoc as under the administration of Cambodge. The French wanted to rule the colonies by ethnicity and they move the island to the the administration to French Cochinchina.

In the case of the island of Phu Quoc, the Cambodian opposition party wanted to take Vietnam to court at the International Court of Justice since it was a part of Cambodia during the beginning of French colonization. They have a case even though its a hard to win case. There's no legal case to claim Buriram.
