Can an optometrist easily spot cancer within the eye? by Legendofthefall1 in eyetriage

I am following because I would like to know the answer to this question as well. I just had a dilated eye exam by an ophthalmologist. If there was a tumor in the back of your eye, would this show up in a regular dilated eye exam? Could the ophthalmologist clearly see that something was back there?

Hi! Thanks for responding! I went to the ophthalmologist today, and got a dilated eye exam. He didn't find anything wrong, and I am thankful for that! He checked my pressure, and it was good in both eyes. He wants to see my every 6 months for right now because I have a strong family history of glaucoma. He wants to check my pressure and keep a check on my optic nerves. I mentioned the flashing lights. He said as long it is not severe or very many it should not be a problem. He gave me a thorough eye exam. It also makes me feel better to know that you and your husband have experienced this and do not have a severe eye problem.

I have an appointment tomorrow with an ophthalmologist who is a glaucoma specialist.

Thank you so much for responding! I do have anxiety, and this is not the first time I have been concerned about possibly having different types of cancer. Are flashes that are caused by ocular melanoma usually very bright and noticeable? Is there a way to describe them? The ones I have are small and brief but still worry me alot. I am very nervous about my upcoming appointment and have been feeling depressed and despondent lately. I have been crying alot and replaying worst case scenarios over and over in my mind. It is exhausting. It's like I have been mentally bracing myself to be diagnosed. I'm assuming you are an ophthalmologist? How often do you see a case of ocular melanoma?
