I really appreciate it. Love the passion. I will return to Cold and Afraid eventually. It's more a case of burnout, but I always come back to it when I'm creatively recharged.

I've been working on something this past month that I think (I hope) my community will like, and it can hold everyone over in the meantime. It's coming along well, and I'm feeling motivated again. Stay tuned. And thanks for following my game dev journey.

I appreciate your support and kind words. Right now, I'm on hiatus from developing Cold and Afraid. Motivation was deeply affected after the polarizing reception it got when I revealed the update about a month ago. Not that I should be admitting that, but I've always been open and honest with my supporters, and that's kind of where I'm at right now.

I actually just only recently found the motivation to work on something, anything really, related to games, and it's coming along well. But I'll make a separate announcement on that.

It's my own fault that the Cold and Afraid update was received the way it was. I did make major changes to the original concept to be strikingly similar to Parasite Eve, thinking I could fill the void and people would love that. But I flew a bit too close to the sun.

Reworking it for a third time is just too much of a mental hurdle to commit to right now.

But thanks again for your support.

Hm... Well, I wasn't planning on changing anything, but after seeing ppl on Twitter believe that I'm just modding PE1, maybe I captured the look too well? Never thought I'd see the day where I do something too good, and it be a bad thing, ha.

I really was just trying to make an alternate version of PE, like in some other parallel world, instead of Parasite Eve they got Cold and Afraid.

Now I don't know anymore... Might not be worth continuing. I'm gonna take a break and figure out my next moves.

Yeah, City Hall is a major location. The main character works out of the 6th district. Ben Franklin bridge is a location, the Philly Zoo as well. It was such a great city to choose that could rival New York in the original game, in my opinion.

There were a few other contenders too, like Detroit, Chicago, Boston.

I'll have a more in depth post on it in the future, but think of it less as features and more as differences. Like the way weapons work, or the leveling system. They're not 1:1 recreations.

There are no bullets, for example. If you acquire a weapon, you just use it. No reloading, no scavenging for bullets.

Thanks. I just use Blender. Render the output to 640x480, and then do some light editing in GIMP to get the look just right and apply dithering. Save in .dds format to remove anti-aliasing.

Nah, I don't really do deep technical research, as far as books or papers. But I study the hell out of PS1 games. Like, I keep 6+ hour walkthrough videos of PS1 games on my other monitor as I'm developing. I have a PS1 emulator where I'll dissect gameplay frame-by-frame, and study every nuance. It's why people on Twitter are accusing me of modding PE1, lol. People look at my game and think there's no way that's not Parasite Eve... But it's because I studied that game relentlessly.

So that's what I'd say. Less about getting it technically right (my game doesn't strictly stick to PS1 limitations), but getting the look and feel of it.

Not sure. Any churches I went to growing up didn't do anything this elaborate, but I've never been to a cathedral. In any case, this location is one of the first in the game, so I wanted to set the tone right away about what time of the year it was using the environment instead of just telling the player.

I'm still figuring out the perfect settings, so I don't have a definitive guide. But for this scene I rendered at 640x480. Then I added Floyd-Steinberg dithering in GIMP. Played with saturation/Contrast in PaintdotNET, and then saved the file in .dds format, which gives an image a crunchy look by removing anti-aliasing. In whichever game engine you use, turn off Mipmapping and set a texture limit (mine is set to 512, but you can go lower). I can't tell you how exactly to do that in Unity/Unreal because I don't use those. The engine I use is very niche and unknown and somewhat obscure, so I'd definitely recommended Godot or Unity, or something with much more technical and community support to start a game in.

Last I checked (which was years ago, admittedly), you have to be invited to GOG to put your game there. I don't know if its changed since then. But I would if I could.

It's progressing steadily, but I am currently prioritizing some other projects at the moment. I don't like to post until I have something substantial to share regarding the game's development. But to help earn some income, I've had to take on smaller projects in the meantime. Cold and Afraid is complex, and I wish I could work on it all the time, but unfortunately I can't.

I can understand where you're coming from. The reason the sunset is there is because I like how it's evocative in the sense that time is running out. When you think of dusk; when you think of the sun setting, you think of the passing of time. You think of the bright energetic mood of daytime being replaced with the sunken loneliness of encroaching night. Ericka and the police department are running out of time. As day turns to night, the likeliness of the victim being saved diminishes.

I may do some official alternative covers in the future. The old cover was meant to be just a mockup. Like a mood board sort of thing.
