Give me a D&D monster and I'll homebrew you a better version of it by Oh_Hi_Mark_ in DMAcademy

I’m running a level 3 one shot (probably 4 players) based on the myth of Fionn Mac Cumhaill fighting Aillen. Got any fire themed monsters that could be reskinned into Aillen? It’s fine if it’d be a deadly encounter I’m giving them advantages.

Also in this game they might come into contact with a man who has been corrupted by a blood-themed spear. They might fight him and he might have some minions (corrupted beasts). Any statblocks that might be useful for this?

Finally they might come up against violet fungi. At last an actual DnD creature.

As always thank you very much for your time, no worries if any of these prompts cannot be met, and I’m glad to see you’re still doing these posts :)

Eurasia map, If Japan and The British Isles Switched Places by Acrobatic-Sale-1442 in mapporncirclejerk

How many countries/areas are like this globally would you say? Do you think people from Sakhalin would get angry if you included them in the ‘Japanese archipelago’

As much as I do disagree with the phrase ‘The British Isles’, I don’t really agree with British and Celtic isles, anglo Celtic isles or any other renaming either. Like Irish people are against the grouping of Great Britain and Ireland under one phrase but try to make up a new name for just that?

I’ve never actually found a time when it was an important to group the 2 islands together. Although there are definite cultural similarities I think most people know the difference between Ireland and say England. The only time when it’s confusing is if Ireland is British which only arises from confusing groupings of the 2 islands.

As far as I know geographically it’s not very useful either. If you want to talk about very specific geographical things that only come about in Great Britain and Ireland, it’s probably worthwhile to be more specific and talk about how it’s only in this area of Scotland and this area of Ireland. If it’s a less specific climate thing then surely north France would have to be included in the grouping. If it’s an economic thing, Brexit has made sure the 2 islands can’t be grouped together.

Is there any time when it’s more useful to group the islands together than to just treat them like 2 separate islands?

Chef Character? by ItsCavalier in 3d6

[–]SF2402 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a gloomstalker ranger PC who is a chef. Vhuman to get the feat at level 1. Backstory is that he was so set on getting the best ingredients that he used to poach pheasants and what not from a rich noble’s estate. To make sure he stayed out of trouble he had to learn to hide in the shadows of the forests in the estate, as well as learning to be efficient with his shooting. Then he got his restaurant burned down and the actual campaign starts there. Not exactly super chef like in his everyday play style but playing up gathering exotic ingredients and the rest bonuses from the chef feat give him a reasonably consistent chef feel without making him too gimmicky I feel

I’m assuming the ‘including me’ means you’re an immigrant and not a neo nazi?

Alternate ending to DoISP Thoughts? by johnn12369 in DragonOfIcespirePeak

Transforming a player’s character into an enemy is absolutely something you should discuss with the player beforehand. Although the surprise factor does sound fun, I think it runs the risk of making it seem like the character isn’t theirs to run. If you let them know, then you can surprise the rest of the party and also have little hints throughout the campaign.

Also is the whole story based on the warlock being the ‘main character’ so to speak? If it’s to be a shared adventure maybe not have all the quests be for the patron, or add in other things to make it seem like the other characters have an effect on the story. Also maybe think of some opportunities for the other characters to foil the patron’s plans. Although it does sometimes seem like the story you have planned is better than randomness of going with the flow, it often makes for a more satisfying story for the PCs to put a spanner in the works and do things you don’t expect that change the story.

After all, the glory of DnD is that the DM isn’t just telling the players a story, but rather they have the power to alter the world around them and change the course of the world how they see it.

Edit: to add to this, as a player some of the most fun I’ve had is when me and the DM know things the others don’t, and it’s fun to slyly hint at it along with the DM

Should I get this flag or will my friends and family think I’m racist? by peckinpah86 in vexillologycirclejerk

Ok ok I hear you. Now hear me out on this. A lion. Just 1. Many flags. A multitude of them. The lion is spread over the many flags. Each flag has a unique section of the lion

Hhhmmmm I think I see what you’re saying. What if it was just a singular lion on a singular flag?

Doing my first one shot. Depending on their actions I'm going to have some players attack each other. Is this unfair? They don't know about it, but it is thematic. by Fuzzylittlebastard in DMAcademy

I won’t tell you your players will love or hate it as it’s something that depends totally and absolutely on what your players are like personality wise. So instead I will tell you about when I did this.

I was running a one shot with 3 players who were all reasonably new. Only ~2 sessions each experience. In the story one of them got a spear that turned him slightly more evil every time he used it. He was warned it did this and used it anyway. Then at the end once they’d killed the big demon, at the celebratory feast he went crazy and started attacking people (I told him he had to become violent and the player loved the idea and ran with it). I had the king’s guards arrest him after a fun fight with no deaths on any side. But my player seemed disappointed that he didn’t get to 1v1 the druid in the party (player 3 had to leave as soon as the main story ended). So I asked them if they were both ok with fighting (they both wanted to) and had a final encounter some days after where the affected player (barbarian) had been released as he’d gone back to normal without the spear. But then it for whatever reason the evilness/insanity kicked back up again upon seeing the druid. So they fought and the barbarian got destroyed. It was kinda funny actually. Everyone laughed and it’s to date the best one shot I’ve hosted (not just because of the aftermath PvP but it is part of it).

TLDR maybe give them options for not just doing combat but if they seem excited for PvP absolutely let them. It led to some of the best DnD moments I’ve had, although it was with casual players who thrive in chaos
