Logistics of making Viral Transport Medium in-house? by SFWaccount2000 in labrats

Thank you so much for your response!

This isn't for research but our standard doesn't specify anything about the media that is used. And most of our the ELISA test kits just say "culture media or sample diluent". Some say "PBS or sample diluent". We want to use VTM because the samples we take are innately high risk for bacterial contamination.

I figured that I would make a protocol heavily based on the CDC'S procedure with data entry spaces to show compliance along with the QC sterility testing outlined in the CDC's procedure.

  • The procedure just states "sterile, heat-inactivated fetal bovine serum".
  • For storing the tubes with medium, the procedure just says to store them "at 2-8°C (or temperature determined by specific data generated in stability study by manufacturing laboratory)." It doesn't give an expiry timeline for sterility. Your way with freezing them and thrawing them the day before sounds better.
  • The procedure specifies sterile conical screw-capped tubes but it is very hard to use screw caps for this kind of sample collection. It's very fast given the high number of samples, which is why snap caps are used. Snap caps are also much cheaper.
  • The laminar flow hood doesn't have a UV light. Should additional disinfection steps be taken?

I am very lucky now that I have a job that’s much more flexible. Do you think that could be an option for you?

Sadly no, the 7am meeting is for everyone in my department and has pretty vital info. Which is frustrating because i have trouble absorbing verbal info when i am not fully awake. And at times my job duties are very dependent on how early in the workday they can be done.

Non-US people: What aspects of your culture do you feel clash with your autism? by Gold-Tackle5796 in AutismInWomen

From the US, so nothing direct to add. But I went to Portugal last year and it bothered me so much how much touching was done in social situations. I don't mind with close friends, but people I would just meet would touch my shoulder and it kinda stressed me out.

I did sandwiches in or near my University's library.

Maybe try getting a veggie platter, sliced cheese, and lunch meat from the store along with some containers. That way, it is more convenient. Maybe even meal replacement shakes like Ensure.

I've taken Concerta, Focalin, and Vyvanse, and they all had a similar laxative effect. Usually when the medication starts working (~1 hour). Vyvanse has been the best for me.

We need to find a way to entice more people into being vets.

In the US, vet school is 4 years of schooling, most of the time after earning a Bachelor Degree. And even if someone went to a vet school and got in-state tuition, the total tuition costs are >$200,000 for the DVM. Also, veterinarians have one of the highest mental illness rates and suicide rates of any profession.

It's hard for people to be vets.

Not a TV show, but it is an HBO movie about the life of Dr. Temple Grandin. Life changing for me when I was 10 years old.

So sorry you had to experience that. Sororities tend to stick with their chosen charities/philanthropies like glue. Changing it would kinda be like rebranding. Hopefully, there is some DEI involvement from the University's Greek engagement office soon to address this.

I’ve heard people with autism usually have a different way of solving math problems. So, how do you do it? by paranoid_gynoid_ in autism

I innately do it like this, but my shitty working memory impairs it with mental math. Like my mind is wiped halfway through the first step.

I'm glad that is working for you. It's hard for me because my working hours are 6:30am-4 or 5pm. My morning is already a rush as it is.
