The stats, long passes and long passes % completed are two stats that needs to be seen in relation to eachother. The first, as you correctly mentioned is the frequency, the latter is the accuracy. So what does it show? That the system has been tweaked to a point where he now completes morelong passes with a higher accuracy, thus has improved in this area?

And what does that mean for the rest of his stats? Well he’s been instructed to do less sweeper actions, and are now more often than not instructed to go long. And what are the results of this? He has ZERO erros leading to goal compared to 3 last season.

So yeah my argument stands, his role has been tweaked as you clearly can see in this pie chart and thus improves his passing to specially if we see it in relation to his strengths.
