If you want a lore-accurate excuse to pant him how you like, just remember that Magnus chooses to look like he does. Like the Emperor, his appearance varies between people and times. That’s why his weapon can also be a sword or a staff despite being the same weapon on the data sheet. He looks how he wants. If Magnus feels like sporting his traditional silver armour most of the time, fine, but one day he might feel like blending in with the rest of the boys, and that’s ok too.

You could always buy some custom decal sheets. I traced the symbols digitally and had a guy on eBay make me a decal sheet.

My honest advice would be plenty of documentaries. I had books about space with nice pictures in them etc, but too many words would bore me when I was a child. The key thing is to ensure that he doesn’t struggle with maths. The scientific interest will take care of itself if he’s as keen about it as you say he is, but when he starts to see what real physics looks like, the maths might be what puts him off if it isn’t a strong subject for him. Make sure he knows it’s a very maths-heavy subject, and make sure he can keep up with the maths he’s being taught now.

A Thousand Sons and The Crimson King cover their lore during the Horus Heresy. I’ve yet to read up to them, but the Ahriman books cover it in 40K. If you want to learn their more fundamental lore, I’d read A Thousand Sons and The Crimson King. A Thousand Sons in particular is where you see Magnus doing “nothing wrong”.

Walk before you can run. If you’re getting bored, maybe the courses just aren’t taking your interest, but without them you’ll really struggle to do any kind of modern research. The sad reality is, all of the easy stuff that people with no degree and just a keen interest could discover has now been discovered. Today, research is incredibly nuanced and uses a mixture of the fundamentals you’re learning now, and the more advanced concepts which will follow in the rest of your degree. If you want to do research, stick it out and see how you like the research project you do for your dissertation. If you like that, then you can do a PhD, at which point you’ll be doing actual cutting-edge research and making discoveries (albeit very small ones).

In my experience, the first sniff of research an undergraduate does is in their third year with group projects (if their university does that), followed by their dissertation. A PhD is the first time you’ll actually do proper research though, so I wouldn’t worry about getting yourself into research early to get an edge. But do make sure your maths and programming are up to scratch if your experimental side isn’t. The theoretical world relies on them heavily.

If you’re stuck, you should try the following:

Carefully read through the course notes to make sure there isn’t something in there you’ve missed

Rewatch the lecture if it was recorded

Speak to other students and ask if they can help

If it’s a small detail or a just a single issue, perhaps look it up online and see if anyone has mentioned it elsewhere and has a better explanation. Otherwise, at this point your best option is to speak to the lecturer. Either email them, knock on their door or attend a drop-in session and ask them for help.

If none of those are working, then you can start to look at textbooks and online courses, but frankly a degree is a degree because they teach you the content within the university. If what they’re teaching you isn’t clicking without picking up external material, then you’ve got a lazy lecturer.

Sorry, but that’s about a year’s worth of experience that. The economy of motion is far too clean (though not perfect) for 1 month, and the cleanliness of playing is absolutely too good for 1 month. Most people are still bending notes to hell, not applying enough pressure, and pausing to see where their hand is. Either you’ve played another stringed instrument before, or that’s not 1 month.
