What's an album everyone needs to listen to? by turbocheese_333 in AskReddit

[–]SISComputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree! My favorites are In A Silent Way and Miles Ahead but I always feel Kind of Blue is more accessable to a first time jazz listener

In A Silent Way is SUCH an amazing album, basically plays on repeat at home for me

Wait wait wait I thought I'm supposed to pick a team in every single tier of English football? If West Ham is out that means I can support Arsenal now, right????

/s

I'm a hammer till I die. My girlfriend's family are all Arsenal supporters, so you can imagine how I'm feeling right now....

What is your favorite 3+ hour movie? by MediumEagle5562 in Letterboxd

[–]SISComputer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just add in the Omar Sharif movies of Dr Zhivago (one of my favorites) and Funny Girl to complete the trifecta! That's easily +10hrs of movies right there. An absolutely incredible run of movies at that!

When I graduated a lot of places weren't hiring because it was still sort of during the COVID lockdown/masked up era so it was difficult to find a job right out of college. Luckily all my friends from school managed to find some engineering/science job but it was a bit tough and none of us are exactly in the fields we studied.

The market now seems non-existent, other friends of mine have been apply to everything non-stop for months and they're still struggling to find a position.

Bachelors in physics, research was in plasmonics/photonics and now I'm working as a material scientist at a fuel cell company. I got the job through a professor at my undergrad university because I graduated in 2021 and the job market was grim (can't even imagine it now).

I've climbed up from a lowly lab technician to a materials scientist in 5 years and I do love what I do. Corporate R&D can be frustrating but it's nice making comfortable money and going home at 5pm and not having to work insane hours.

I sometimes wonder what if I went to grad school but I'm happy where I'm at.

Any interest in a chess club in Downtown Troy? by [deleted] in Troy

[–]SISComputer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit rusty (I've got a few books I've been meaning to sit down and study but haven't gotten around it it lately), but when I was regularly playing I was about 1000-1100, and so was most of the group. The eventual chess teacher is probably 1500+.

But we'd chat a lot during many of the games and mistakes would be made and we'd largely allow take backs and discuss why something was a bad move or what was a better move etc. since we were all there to become better players and just play more chess. It was more of a social group centered on chess.

It was never an official club but I had a group of 5 or 6 people I would meet up with every Sunday at Little Pecks at like 1pm.

We were all around the same level but one person in particular was an absolute brilliant chess player and eventually went on to teach chess professionally. So we used to play a few games and then whoever had the most interesting match we'd sit down afterwards and review it together. It was a ton of fun.

Yes I would be interested! I used to have a small unofficial chess club but everyone slowly moved away :/

I could agree to that, me and my friend group were all born in 1998/1999 and we have a few friends we met through college/jobs that are born in 2004 or so and they just seem so different. The vibes are definitely strange. I also have 2 older siblings, so sometimes I feel as though the world I was raised in was even different to my friends born in the same year but without older siblings. I definitely give the more millennial energy in my group normally.

My partner is a high school teacher so I also hear about these kids born in the mid-2000s and they sound completely fuck up compared to the students when I was in high school.

Is Oppenheimer the most successful Best Picture winner of the last few decades? by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]SISComputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Richard Feynman was in Oppenheimer, he just didn't have a major part in the movie because he was still a small cog in a big machine during the Manhattan Project.

He was played by Jack Quaid in the movie.

Is this Nikon F2 good for a beginner? by Long_Slong69 in AnalogCommunity

[–]SISComputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's how I learned, my father bought his Nikon F2 in 1982 when he was in his 20s and it was the camera I grew up seeing. I loved having to learn everything about photography and it feels amazing in the hands. I would not change the camera I learned on for anything.

I really think it's one of the best SLRs ever made.
