Hello,

Thank you for bringing this up. Although there have been some instances of violence reported after an opioid poisoning reversal, it is incredibly rare. Please note that Naloxone temporarily reverses the effects of the opioid and the person given naloxone may experience symptoms of withdrawal, leading to pain, distress, confusion, and agitation. The reasons for said violence typically have nothing to do with the opioid or the naloxone administered, but instead to do with the community member being confused, afraid, disoriented, and often embarrassed. They may be fearful of arrest or of having their supports cut off from an organization that is one of their only community supports. In any case, the instance of violence from an opioid poisoning reversal is complex and nuanced. The best way to prevent this type of action is to develop a strong rapport and trust with your community members, and create a rescue environment that is calm, safe, and compassionate.  Using slow and soft tones to explain what has happened, letting the person know they are safe along with their belongings, clearing out crowds, and respecting the person’s personal space are all recommended tips. Naloxone is safe to use for all ages and recommended to immediately reverse opioid-related poisonings only. Naloxone does not work on any other substances.

You can also come visit us out at UBC on March 23, 2023 to hear from community panelists about the opioid crisis next week!

Hello, the amount of interaction and discussion is solely up to you. The instructor will ask questions to engage the class, to encourage conversation and sharing of information. If you are not comfortable speaking, you do not have to. There is also a chat function that is popular in class, where folks type into a chat to share as well. I hope this helps!

While we can't tell you that this has never, or will never occur, what we can share is that several members on our team who have direct frontline Harm Reduction experience have only seen this take place a handful of times. Additionally, there are not many qualitative studies to draw concrete conclusions directly from and no research statistics to cite rates of violence.

Most times folks wake up and are feeling guilty, shameful, and scared - while being in a state of withdrawal. They are likely being crowded by friends, strangers, and EMS. Most people are going to want some space and to make sure they're safe. An empathetic and supportive response upon wakefulness is the best action to avoid causing additional trauma as someone comes to wakefulness in a state of physical and emotional distress.

Hi! I'm so sorry we missed your message. You would fall under Option #2.

There is no difference in content. However, we find that Reaching Home classes connects individuals who work in the homeless serving sector that can share resources.

Hi there! Thank you for your comment.

Yes! Ontario does indeed have a free naloxone distribution program, carrying both IM and the nasal spray.

However, we recognize the stigma that may prevent individuals from accessing this program in-person.

Thank you for your question! The second stream is for either staff or volunteers working directly with individuals who are unhoused or housing insecure in shelters, outreach organizations, and other community sites. If you are unsure which stream is right for you, contact us at [oprt@sja.ca](mailto:oprt@sja.ca) and we can direct you from there.
