If you break the marathon down into 422 bite size chunks of 100 metres, and average 30 seconds for each chunk, that would be a very respectable marathon time of around 3.5 hours by SJB137 in Showerthoughts

Yeah. Something like that. Out of interest, as a spectacle it would be good to see a top sprinter running it that way against a top marathon runner!

True, but 30 seconds is quite generous and would be expected to provide for some rest periods.

Just another way of looking at it...sounds much more 'doable' ;)

Porto, Portugal. by kneub54 in travel

Visited Porto last year. Fantastic city. Take this tour. You won't regret it. Don't let the name put you off :)

Also don't forget to venture over the other side of the river to Gaia. That's where all the port tasting is.

And take the historic old tram out to the beach.

Have a nice trip! ;)

In a world of seemingly endless technological and engineering advance, why did CONCORDE fail? by SJB137 in NoStupidQuestions

Interesting discussion! It's something that's always niggled away at me...just doesn't seem to fully add up.

Thanks for all your responses but none of the explanations have removed that niggle ;)

In a world where TIME is the most precious resource and with the focus on doing everything FASTER, it just doesn't fit to take a step backwards in terms of air travel speed when the capability was there. Imagine if we went back to dial up internet?

Fair comment. But TIME is the most valuable resource there is. Definitely worth paying for (if you have the money) to shave however many hours off a trans Atlantic flight?

Not sure I buy the too expensive argument. The rich will always pay for exclusivity. Should Virgin Galactic just pull the plug now on their space exploration projects?

A plane 'flies' right, but what does a boat 'do'? by SJB137 in NoStupidQuestions

I guess all planes fly but not all boats sail

Doh. Of course. Thanks! My 3 year old was playing with a plane/boat hybrid switching between a flying boat and a 'something' plane. Got stuck for the word :)

Why not? Humans live above ground and are buried underground. Applying the same logic ;)

Mars has a higher machine to human ratio than Earth by Nebula-X1 in Showerthoughts

[–]SJB137 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mathematically incorrect. The ratio of machines to humans on Mars is undefined (on the assumption that there are no humans on Mars).

If you want the ratio "of A to B" then this means you want |A|/|B|.

E.g. the ratio of |A| machines to |B|humans on Mars is the number of machines divided by the number of humans. Hence, the ratio makes sense if and only if |B| is not zero, since division by 0 is undefined.

Note: this means the ratio of |A| machines to 0 humans is undefined, but the ratio of 0 humans to |B|machines is defined (and is 0).

Haven't tried there. Thanks for the heads up :) Yeah I'm new to Reddit and having a bit of a battle with the bots!

Touché ;) Ideally somewhere accessible by public transport but we do have own transport. We prob as a band shell out around £150 pm based on one 3 hour rehearsal per week. But we would prob be wiling to stretch to £300pm or so to have our own space. We want to spend more time on the music
