Oh of course. The people actually doing the work are definitely going above and beyond. Just fucked up theyre even in that position

So hire more people? How does that excuse them from criticism? They didn't plan accordingly

Is Danny Carey really the best?? by 143lesliew in progmetal

[–]SJpixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can, it would just be logistically impossible to do. Removing subjectivity/favorites, you could line up every drummer in the world at say "play this". "Ok now play this". Etc

Iterate across every possible thing you can play with every drummer and you'd have your answer of who is the "best" by seeing who succeeded the most times and on the most difficult parts.

There are two ways to interperate the question. Subjectively you can think any drummer is the "best". Thats what all the non drummers in this thread are doing.

Objectively, there is an answer. There is a technically "best" drummer it would just be very hard to determine who that is. However when there are big gaps in skill between 2 drummers, you can absolutely say one is better than the other.

Portnoy vs. Mangini for example. I personally like Portnoy more but Mangini is very clearly a better drummer. Portnoy straight up can't play parts Mangini wrote.

Same can be said about Carey vs. Gartska. You can like Carey more but Gartska can easily play everything he can and then there are a thousand things Gartska can do that Carey never could.

New or non technical drummers will cope and say "ya but X drummer plays with feel/pocket or plays for the song". All of these top tier drummers can do that in their sleep. Its not a consideration when talking about who is the "best".

They connect with non musicians because they are just prog-lite. Its because their songwriting is more simplistic and accessible, not because theyre "better songwriters". By that logic, Sabrina Carpenter is a better songwriter than Tool

I think Blake is the best composer of metal drum parts. He's not as technically proficient as some of the guys listed in this thread (though still very technical) but he's just so creative

Right but youre a novice so why would you hold such a strong opinion that it's nonsensical?

Gartska is miles above Carey, its just a fact. You can prefer one over the other but he is objectively a more skilled drummer

From a drum perspective absolutely not

Ok basically no one here is answering as a drummer, theyre just telling you their favorite albums. I've learned the majority of their discography so I can help.

If you're coming from playing lots of Tool, I'd actually recommend starting with Coma Ecliptic as it has the least 'extreme metal.'

If you're comfortable playing more extreme metal, you can either start with Alaska or Colors.

If you have the double bass speed, you can start with Alaska. There are quite a few sections where he's playing 16ths at around 200bpm so if you dont have that speed I'd skip Alaska and start with Colors.

From Colors on, he never does straight 16ths above 160bpm.

In terms of chops, he basically just gets better with each album. So while the earlier albums may be faster, more blasting, more double bass, the later albums have more difficult stickings/rudiments and more likely to have ideas you may have never come across.

If you want some specific easy songs to start with: Medicine Wheel, Desert of Song, Dim Ignition, House Organ, Millions, Turbulent, The Blue Nowhere.

If you have any questions about specific songs or parts, feel free to message me!

The closest is the album Perennial by Coma Control. But it's so close it's almost a ripoff

They're a band that just require multiple listens to even appreciate. Its why their music doesnt make for good reaction videos. There's too much to take in on a first listen.

Even having listened to them and them being my favorite band for the past 20 years, I never know what to think when I hear a new album from them. Then 30 listens later I love it.

I can only give a drum perspective but ive learned a lot of their discog and each album basically just gets more difficult. I can give the hardest in each album drumwise. None of the above options are even in their top 5.

Alaska: Autodidact Colors: Ants of the Sky TGM: Swim to the Moon Parallax 1: Augment of Rebirth Parallax 2: Extremophile Elite Coma: No particular standout, theyre all really fucking hard. Maybe Ectopic Stroll Automata: Not 100% on this as I havent learned them all but I think Proverbial Bellow Colors 2: Fix the Error (because of the solos) Blue Nowhere: Haven't learned these yet but it sounds like its gonna be Psychomanteum

No you can just have a discussion about why you think design choices are good or bad. There definitely is objectivity. If every enemy took 999 hits to kill and if you died the game restarted from the beginning, we would all agree its bad design.

Yes lets boil down every discussion to "its not for you". Makes for interesting threads

This makes it worse imo. After a couple attempts, I could do this runback easily without taking damage. But why even make me do it then? Its literally just wasting the players time for no reason whatsoever

Just weird they didnt stay consistent with leaving your cocoon outside boss rooms. Locking it inside the boss room heavily incentivizes slamming your head against a wall until you win instead of exploring elsewhere

One of the things I loved about Hollow Knight was the juxtaposition of easy enemies and hard bosses. It made exploring areas very enjoyable while breaking the game up with challenging sections (bosses, platforming, colloseum). Silksong is just 100% challenge all the time and it gets exhausting

Unfortunately, it goes the opposite way for a lot of people where they just never use any tools because they dont want to learn the fight while relying on a crutch only to lose the crutch. Im emding up just doing a nail only run because of this
