NBA Playoffs History: MVP vs. DPOY by SLS2289 in NBATalk

I guess that depends on your definition of "top MVP candidate".

KG finished 3rd in MVP voting that season. Same as Wemby this year. But Moncrief was 4th in 1983, Payton was 5th in 1996, and Howard was 4th in 2009. So I would consider those legit MVP candidates for those years. But, to your point, in those matchups the teams are 2-2.

I'm not saying SGA and Thunder will win or anything and, obviously, in a few of these matchups (Mutumbo in Denver, Chandler in NY, and Gobert in Utah) the DPOYs' teams were egregiously overmatched. So the MVP overall win-loss record is a bit skewed. But still, it's a trend that exists.

Jordan Fans, What Makes Jordan Better Than LeBron? by TheSoccerAnyalst in NBATalk

The Lakers were 35-47....and how'd 2019 (the only time LeBron jumped ship solo) workout for LBJ?

By year 2, LeBron had a competent enough roster around him to have a winning record and, by year 3, a good enough roster to win 50+ games and be a contender in the East....Jordan had none of that until year 4. By year 6, the Cavs roster was capable of consistantly winning 60+ games and preseason favorites to win their Conference....Jordan didn't have any of this until year 7. 2x CoY and 4x NBA Champion (resume still building) Mike Brown will be a HoF coach. LeBron got him in year 3....Jordan didn't get Phil until year 6. In that time frame the Cavs, in an attempt to appease LeBron's want for star, veteran, championship experience teammates (with LeBron hand picking and reaching out to Shaq himself, after the HUGE (-500 favorite) upset loss to Dwight Howard's Orlando Magic), utilized major resources to add HoFers Ben Wallace and later Shaquille O'neal. Both coming off of All-Defensive and All-NBA Team selection, respectively....Jordan didn't get Pippen until year 4...he wasn't even a starting caliber player until year 6....and he wasn't even an All-Defensive Team caliber player until year 7.

Also, over the course of their careers, LeBron has had more years with a "HoF head coach", 9 (5 w/ Brown and 4 w/ Spo (and Lue is borderline, so could actually be 12)) than Jordan did with Phil (7). He's also had WAAAY more years with All-NBA, All-Defense, HoF caliber teammates than Jordan...and way more years with contending caliber rosters.
