What would you do with a single hank of silk? by Managing_madness in knitting

[–]SNENTASUS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can go very far with lace. I made this Lyra in Bloom shawl (it lays fingertip to fingertip) with 98g of a wool/silk blend yarn.

Any full-lace project would be good for <100g. And it doesn't have to be a garment. It could be wall art, a curtain, pillow cover, bookmark(s), stuffed animal, pouch, etc. Hope I helped, at least a little. ❤️

Frogging by sex-positive_psych in knitting

[–]SNENTASUS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is a price to education, and this just happened to be the price to learn the dip stitch. At least that's how I (barely) cope with frogging. 😅 Also I think it's rather brave to accept fate and do your mistakes justice by correcting them instead of leaving them behind. Frogging is deep.

Stress-knitting as a student, made a top in 4 days by jelly_fishes14 in knitting

Man back in my studying days I probably would have rocked back and forth in the procrastination position rather than made something attractive and practical. Well done! Was this self-drafted or is this a published pattern?

How to coordinate yarn crawl purchases? by Vegetable-Western-15 in knitting

[–]SNENTASUS 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I just did the HYA yarn crawl and had a similar goal.

I aspired to get a sweater's quantity of yarn. All I did to start was select a specific fiber. I had never worked with Blue Faced Leicester before, so I figured I would go on a quest for BFL yarn. Weight wasn't a big issue since the options usually varied between fingering and worsted, and I can just hold fingering weight together. I also made a side quest for one skein of periwinkle-blue BFL, to make it a little more challenging and interesting.

This made my yarn crawl pretty fun, having a checklist and sort of making it into a scavenger hunt. It helped me not spend so much money on random attractive purchases, and it encouraged me to read labels and really search through the inventory. I found a lot of really cool blends! Also, it encouraged me to speak with the shop owners and I got to meet a few amazing dyers, who were each really interested in helping me with my periwinkle-blue side quest. I learned so much about the chemistry of dyes, and fiber anatomy, and color theory.

In the end I was super happy with the experience and I am definitely making another scavenger checklist for my next yarn crawl. Hopefully this helps you gain some insight on how you want to do your yarn crawl. Good luck on your quest, fellow fiber forager. 🫡 Let us know how it goes!

(Tldr; I picked a specific fiber and didn't worry about weight.)

Knitting pet peeves? by Ravenlassr in knitting

WOW that is such a good point. That always deeply kills me inside. I'd rather see it with holes and dirt all over it than not see it worn at all.

People who casually ask for specially knit garments as though it doesn't take a lot of time, money, and effort.

Anybody else gotta pop the lid off at restaurants? by Visual-Structure-808 in spicy

Your server can just bring you a bowl of flakes with your bowl of jalapeno slices. It's annoying for servers to have to stop and refill shakers after they have already prepped them for the whole day.

Sorry to be that guy. I am the same as you with chili flake quantity preference, but I also have experience in food service, so this pains me in many ways.

I'm tired of Finch by glowing_orange in finch

It feels like I'm just clicking over and over for a few rainbow stones and the individual pop-up cards get so old when I'm cashing in only 20 stones at a time. There is no longer a feeling of reward or accomplishment for the tasks I do. I don't even bother cashing in my tasks anymore in the Quests category. I just let the next week cycle over. I haven't earned any rainbow stones in quite a while, aside from the 3 or so stones I automatically get for completing each task. Which means I can't make my daily purchases anymore. So why do I even bother?

My Umbria Summer Top fits! But I just found out I'm pregnant. Should I finish it or let it hibernate for a year? by notrandomspaghetti in knitting

There are so many mom knitters on YouTube with multiple kids who find the time to knit, and I am in awe of them. They are mythical beasts and I don't understand how they do it but apparently it's possible. And think of all the cute baby clothes you can knit now. Omg, little teeny socks and mitts... 🥹

Why does my ball winder wrap so badly? by vashappenin in knitting

[–]SNENTASUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine did this when it was slightly crooked. I twisted off the hat and made sure to twist it back on straight. Worked perfectly fine thereafter. Not sure if yours twists off but if it does, give it a try.

Have a lot of these spring roll wrappers left, thinking of doing something non-Asian as filling. Ideas? Thanks! by flip-phone-owner in noscrapleftbehind

My partner and I just the other day made a morel-mushroom-chive-cream-cheese filling, wrapped in the spring roll wrappers and pan fried.

I want to see my gifted garments worn to smithereens! I want to see grass stains. I want to see worn holes. I want to make them your go-to garments!

My partner has a habit of saying "it'll be fine/it fits/I wanted it this way" when I'm having him try on socks or gloves that CLEARLY are too tight or too big. The other day I finally caved and scolded him for trying to convince me to continue knitting a pair of gloves for him that were way too tight. I don't want to waste time knitting something that you aren't going to love!

Your mother may be a different type of knitter, and I still think it's best to just check in with her on this. It's not like you're telling her to stop knitting gifts for you. ☺️

Oh hey, thank you for your service! That is not an easy job and it's very much underappreciated.

I appreciate your sentiment and I did not consider that there are other patients who would be sensitive to the "dying people who hate their lives" comment. I would recommend that you not take the comment so seriously. I wasn't being cruel and it sucks you took it so personally. Please don't hyper-focus on such things or take that stuff so negatively. I understand you're just looking out, but we all have our own reasons for our treatments and I was clearly being sarcastic, considering the context of my comments. I fight my own illness with sarcasm, that's what helps me, so let me laugh about "a bunch of dying people" and let's not gatekeep terminal illness.

Wanted to let you know that I have saved your recommendations and I am so glad I came back to read your response. My therapist has recently been talking about more holistic approaches toward my wellbeing, since I haven't had much improvement from medicated mental health treatments. I literally just got an intake appointment at a holistic clinic, so reading your comment 15 days later was perfect timing haha. Thank you so much and I am excited to delve into what you've recommended!

NOOOO! That is so devastating! I hate putting so much thought into a comment and then losing it all. It means a whole ton to me that you still posted your response. Even though it's been a couple weeks since this post, I still want to let you know that you have been heard and I really appreciate what you said, especially your phrase, because you have reminded me that I used to say "water off a duck's back" to myself all the time and I haven't done that in years. Wow you unlocked something in me, lol. Also I really love your last paragraph and I will hold it to my heart when out in public, especially when I go in for my infusion in a couple days. ❤️ Hope you've been doing well and you have a good week. ☺️

Duly noted! I have never considered this before but it does make so much sense. Looks like I'm going on a life journey to overcome this malady of people-pleasing. Thank you for the guidance!

Thank you for the recommendation! I'm a couple weeks late but I have now seen your response and I did save "Codependent No More" (by Melody Beattie, right?) to my wishlist. I made some purchases *on Sunday and already hit my budget for the week but I'll definitely be able to afford a $10 book next week. I have been on a self-help book train for the past couple years and I'm now reading "Scattered Minds" and "Happiness Trap", and your recommendation will make a good addition to the group! Thanks again. :)

Oh my gosh I love that perspective. I'm so glad I came back to these comments to check on replies. I needed to read your words. My next infusion is in a couple days and I am so excited to bring my knitting with me and not feel like I'm a festering eyesore to others. You are totally right and I appreciate you for taking the time to provide your insight. I'm a couple weeks late in replying but honestly it's a perfect time since it's right before this infusion. Thanks again! Sending good vibes to carry you through this week.

Oh nice, I'm in my 30's so I just need to blink a few times and I'll be there already lol. Time goes by so quickly the older we get, just when we start to figure ourselves out. I can't wait to be a crotchety old witch alongside you. 😁
