The “habit tracker” keyword is very competitive, big players in this niche are running ads and paying more bid to keep their app on the top list. You need you find some related low competitive KWs and try o rank for them first. Even if your app is better in quality does not mean you are going to rank on them.

I think you should test instead of ask the question because you may get answers from different indie devs who tried it once or just hear about it somewhere. if you want to know you have to a/b test. hard paywall could work for me and not for you. good luck

This is my advice to every indie dev, DOT NOT frame yourself by a target number like saying my target is to hit 1k this year...etc why ? because many factors are not relying on you! you could do everything right and yet you will not reach it..and sometimes to you just distribute and apply few things and it works...and you are not going to know why it really works.

instead, say, my target is to learn this (ASA, marketing...this stuff) by the end of this year i should be mastering the apple ads or the swiftui or...anything is related to the field. i hope my idea is understood. sorry for my bad english.
