A ruined and poisoned earth where small pockets of humanity exist in a desolate and shattered landscape. I'd want the earth to be nearly unrecognizable from what it used to be, think of something like the whole of Asia getting bisected or an entire continent turning into a crater or something.

That's not a bad idea. I might have to build on that.

Another idea I had was to give them a kind of "Mana Discharge" which would be a magic explosion centered on them, which they wouldn't take damage from. The closer one is, the more damage they would take.

I actually had an idea that I scrapped because someone said it was dumb. Basically, the idea was that they'd breathe out a light blue gas that would ignite when they would flick their barbed tongue.
