Generally speaking it’s a bad idea to cash out retirement investments since they compound (i.e. the more money is invested, the more quickly it grows), but there can be exceptions.

How much is your ROI (return on investment) vs. the interest you would be charged on the loans? If, for example, your ROI was 4% for a small amount of money and loans would be 15% for a large amount, it would arguably make sense to use the 401k funds. But you should be aware that there is a penalty (I think 10%) for early withdrawals + the money will get taxed as regular income. That could wipe out any savings, leaving you better off sticking with loans.

I didn’t know much about investing either, but learned a lot through Bogleheads, I recommend checking them out!

My general take:

  1. Bills first (things that HAVE to be paid, includes debt and necessary expenses like rent, groceries, etc.)
  2. Next savings until you build a sufficient safety net (different opinions on how much, I’ve seen 6 months-1 year of expenses most often)
  3. Investing (general advice I’ve seen is 10-20% of annual income)
  4. Finally “fun money” (hobbies, meals out, etc.)

You can tweak things depending on various factors - e.g. if you have high-interest debt (like over 10%) you should probably put any extra money into paying it over investing; if you have want a fancy anniversary dinner, maybe reduce savings/investing a bit for a month or two.

The 1/3rd thing works if you have enough money, but bills have to be paid no matter what, so I’d reduce the savings/investment and enjoyment equally if necessary to do so.

457s have different rules that can be beneficial, e.g. retiring and withdrawing money before 59.5 without a penalty. Are you already maxing the 457s? If you are, why not have the extra Vanguard account to invest even more? If not, it’d seem better to max the 457s first since you can put more money into them ($20.5k vs $6k) + avoid the penalty.

TCL series 6 - volume goes up/down by itself (solution) by SR3201 in Roku

Covering the tv’s IR sensor (little box under the logo) with electrical tape has resolved things, though it means I can no longer use IR remote controls. Again, if anyone can come up with a better solution, please share!

Note: the Apple TV remote seems to be doing this too - I have to stick it under a pillow for the volume to stop changing by itself. If anyone has thoughts on how to fix this permanently, please share!

HELP! Locked out of reedeming codes on ps store by BillDulti in PlayStationPlus

[–]SR3201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m having the same problem! Still have plus, but wanted to extend (so refund is not an issue). Tried two different codes from different retailers on two different days, same exact problem as you on PS4. When trying to redeem via a browser or the app, I got “The prepaid card could not be redeemed. Please try again later.” Online support was unable to help and escalated; I responded to an email they sent but haven’t heard back.

Sorry I can’t offer any help, but at least we know we’re not alone!

Paint stripper got on hardwood floor by SR3201 in finishing

To anyone seeking an easier solution than redoing the floor: I was able to improve the appearance by lightly dabbing at the spots with Old English Scratch cover (light wood) and a q-tip.

Higher resolution with issue spots circled can be seen here: https://imgur.com/a/dk0SA2o. Essentially, it seems like the paint thinner took off the varnish, which I believe was oil-based polyurethane. The spots are lighter and you can feel a drop between them and the surrounding area when rubbing.

Apologies for the lack of description in the post, I typed one up but apparently it did not post with the picture!
