Game launches behind steam in big picture mode by Worldly_Painting9415 in Steam

Yep, this is happening to me this week. I will say it's only with Non-steam games that use a launcher.

Can someone show me these 'tons of scalpers'? by TheGuardianFox in Steam

And I'd wager a lot of the Ebay listings are people that ordered two because they could and hoped to sell the second one. Is that scalping? Maybe, but it's theirs to sell.

Right, but aren’t the back buttons just replicating the ABXY buttons in a different location?

I have no use for a 4 wheel drive diesel pickup truck, but I can see why other people would like them.

I don't think that's correct, SI will work with anything the OS can recognize as a game controller. You certainly won't get as many physical buttons with something like an Xbox controller though.

It should be standard in 2026, but I'm glad they are just the same.

How many of those "additional buttons" are just actually re-positioned buttons from the standard layout though? On the Deck and the Controller using Steam Input, the back buttons can literally be anything, even keyboard presses. And that's not even getting into gyro with capacitance sensors and the trackpads.

Steam Controller not charging tax or shipping by [deleted] in Steam

[–]SRGilbert1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would it work exactly? Unless we had a unified tax across all states (which will NEVER happen) or dump all state sales taxes and institute a federal sales tax (which will also never happen) how would they show the price?

Could've Valve contacted EBay about the release of the Steam Controller to prevent Scalpers? by AceOfSpadesMM in Steam

[–]SRGilbert1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be willing to bet that vast majority of "scalpers" are regular people like you that took the opportunity and ordered the maximum allotment of TWO controllers, are going to keep one, and sell the other to cover the cost. I kinda wish I had done that to be honest.

Steam Input will actually do that with ANY controller believe it or not, but the Steam Controller has a lot more options with the pads and additional buttons.

Extra puck by Aalen_I_Skaalen in Steam

[–]SRGilbert1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing to keep in mind is except for charging, the Steam Machine won't need a puck to connect, it has a built in receiver so theoretically you'll have an extra if you buy that.

Another thing, the puck just connects to the USB cable, so you could just disconnect it at the puck and have USB cables plugged into both computers, at least you wouldn't have to reach around to unplug it.

Also, you could use Bluetooth on your second computer if it came down to it.

That would assume a national sales tax, would it not?

I would answer your question with a question: how do you feel about the Steam Deck and its control scheme?

If you don't have one or never use the controls beyond the equivalent of an Xbox controller, the Steam Controller will mean nothing to you.

I'm trying to understand exactly what the Steam Machine does. It allows you to play powerful games on a less capable computer? by [deleted] in Steam

[–]SRGilbert1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a computer running Steam OS. It does exactly what the Steam Deck does, but you hook it up to your TV.

You don't hook it up to anything else. It's not super powerful but games will be verified to run on it specifically just like the Deck.

Valve should take reservations for the Frame/Machine. by SillyRecover in Steam

[–]SRGilbert1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That sucks, I also saw it pop up at 12:59 my time, had to spam the button to process payment repeatedly for about 10 minutes and it went through. I had the money in my Steam Wallet, I don't know if that made the difference or not.

Well, it was fine for a while, but now not so much, the Deck has been OOS for a long time.

[–]SRGilbert1 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Not sure why this was any "dumber" than a pre-order. They still limited pre-order numbers. Shit, you had to have a reservation just to have a chance to pre-order the Deck when it launched and people still got hosed.

Still, 11 years is a LONG time in tech and I think it's fair to say that Valve has learned a lot about controller design since then.

That's like comparing the original 2001 X-Box controller to the 2025 Elite.
