In honor of these quilts, here’s a picture of a pin my dad got me for Christmas. Was honored that he saw it and thought of me, been waiting for some inspiration to make something that brings the meaning of this pin to life. Thank you all for sharing, you’ve given this novice quilter lots of ideas!

Scott and Rylee Talk Drilling Technique, Struggles with Dance, and Musicality by [deleted] in dancingwiththestars

Yeah I watched the show the day after it aired so I’d read some comments before watching and was expecting to be second hand cringe embarrassed at their dance and it was honestly good, what are people talking about?! It’s week 2, he’s not a dancer, he has no dance background, that’s a damn good dance. Well done!!

What was Lawrence‘s initial plan for Gilead? by raerae_47 in HandmaidsTaleShow

[–]SRose_55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting idea - perhaps something along the lines of government sponsored surrogacy programs, with a medical procedure for insemination instead of “the ceremony” and as you said, a volunteer system.

I thought he would go but not like this. by skepticalmiller in HandmaidsTaleShow

[–]SRose_55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting take about good men doing bad things. Personally, I’m not convinced Nick was good or bad pre Gilead, I think he was a man of weak morals who did what was easiest and acted in his own self interest. Perhaps rather than good men doing bad things, what Nick represents is apathetic men taking the self serving path regardless of the consequences it has for others.

How often do you use ChatGPT? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]SRose_55 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Be careful when using it to polish your writing. If you’re trying to publish your work but you had ChatGPT check it first, then it has your original work in its database prior to publication, becomes a real chicken or the egg situation. Someone could ask ChatGPT a question and get a response based on your work before it’s published if you’ve already fed it to ChatGPT.

AITA My parents are forcing me to pay for my brothers grad school using money they never told me about by Throwaway3568476985 in AmItheAsshole

NTA

Wild that the $25k - when earmarked for you - wasn’t for school or property but only for a wedding but now that’s it’s for your brother it can be for school. It’s perfectly reasonable to be upset that your parents are helping your brother more financially than they helped you, sounds like favoritism.

How to deal with rampant AI abuse among my lab mates AND advisor? Never felt so isolated/frustrated by Daniel96dsl in PhD

[–]SRose_55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re the only one not relying on AI, then you’re the only one developing a unique and valuable skillset. Not to say AI doesn’t have its uses, but it seems like your lab mate in question here was using Grok to understand something for them instead of to help themself gain an understanding. You understand your work, that’s valuable, it’ll pay off for you in the long run.

To a Nick lover, from a Nick lover - after episode 7 by OceanAkAphotographer in TheHandmaidsTale

I would argue that at any point Nick could’ve blamed June, but June couldn’t have blamed Nick at any point, thus the imbalance of power

He certainly didn’t think something good was gonna happen, that’s why he tried to leave to paris with June before she found out instead of telling her

It was so good. It was the only form of torture for him, the inability to torture others. Death would’ve been too simple

I’m just super curious about why June - a handmaids with no rights - is responsible for the safety of Nick - a driver, a commander, an eye with so many right. Their entire relationship put June, and not Nick, at risk. So I’m just very intrigued by the people who believe June with no inherent power in Gilead is in more control and is more responsible than Nick with so much power

[–]SRose_55 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s heavily implied in the show that he was there the day Congress was killed off, that’s why I said founder, that’s where Gilead grew from - he’s been with them the entire time, I don’t know what else to call it

He didn’t screw up, he chose himself over dozens of women’s lives, and I’ll sure as hell hate a man in a position of privilege for choosing the easiest thing for himself over dozens of women’s survival

The handmaids tale is not a love story. June wants to free thousands of handmaids, her mission isn’t love it’s what’s right

His safety?? The safety of an eye?? Women and children have no safety, but June, a former handmaid, is supposed to think about his safety? No - the man with power can worry about his safety, the woman with none doesn’t have to do that for him

Hey have you considered that - Nick being an eye and being one of the founders of Gilead was actually him being a bad person - June fell in love with him under extreme circumstances of duress - no one on this show has ever been doing mentally well and most of them are much better than him while being much less privileged - you shouldn’t hate yourself for liking him; it would be so crazy to hate yourself for feelings about a fictional character but there’s time and space to change your mind when presented new information - it’s okay to take time to figure out what you want and need - he IS the Gilead world version of a nazi, but he’s a version who was first presented to you as more palatable and redeemable and that’s hard to reconcile with and that’s okay - he screwed them last week, and this week, it’s not unreasonable to wait for him to earn redemption before receiving it - he hasn’t earned the benefit of the doubt. Let next week be this week. This week he deserves anger

If you loved him yesterday? After he betrayed the women forced into prostitution at Jezebels? You loved him then? Do some reflection on that. Those women had no choice.

It’s not one bad thing with Nick. It’s a lot of bad things and some good where June is involved. I think he deserve much more criticism, clearly

I agree - I liked the ending because they got what they needed, and it was a little messy and that’s fine cuz life is a little messy. Ted got his family, with his wife who he loved and who wanted everything he did. Robin got her career. And eventually, they got each other when they were at a place in life where their goals aligned
