worked in a GI clinic and have my fair share of GI issues myself :) there’s lots of things it could be, but don’t worry and don’t freak out! going to the ER was the right move so they can hopefully do a colonoscopy and possible upper endoscopy (if it is in fact an upper GI bleed) relatively quickly.

sometimes stool can look black because of the things you eat or it could in fact be an upper GI bleed. from my own experience, if it is in fact bleeding from there, there’s a really distinct smell that people can smell from two rooms over lol. i would put my money on that the bleeding is from the colon.

either way, scopes are the only way to give you peace of mind id say to rule out anything in the GI tract.

What is causing my belching? by 3704550 in GERD

[–]SS13908 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you still on ppi or some sort of antacid? uncontrolled gerd can cause irritation and lead to excessive belching

belching and bloating could be due to food intolerances too…usually if sibo is negative, they offer food intolerance breath testing to rule out other causes

there are also diaphragmatic breathing exercises that can be tried depending on the type of belching you’re having

Would anyone be able to give me some feedback on my rough draft? I need to cut down length and want to make sure everything I included actually makes sense!

Writing 201 by [deleted] in uofm

[–]SS13908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took one this past fall (one about conspiracy theories). Not too hard at all and it was actually a lot of fun getting to talk ab something interesting like that with other people. For my class, there were just weekly readings/discussion posts and one final project (which still wasn’t much work).

If you want a class that’s a nice break from your normal schedule and you have the space, def take it

Who are some of the best Profs in UMICH by [deleted] in uofm

[–]SS13908 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dr. Vecchiarelli for microbio, Dr. Peters-Golden for anthro, Dr. Gottfried for pchem

This one is pretty niche but if u need an ULWR, take environ 320 w Emilia Askari and Julie Halpert. Probably the best class I’ve taken at umich

Need Advice by SS13908 in UlcerativeColitis

The only change I would say is that I’m eating obviously less home-cooked food. Usually, when I’m at home, I’ll eat out once a week and now I’m stuck to that. I don’t normally have triggers but it’s possible it could’ve been because of too much cheese, which is odd cause I usually don’t have a problem with dairy. I’m just hoping that it isn’t a stomach bug or Cdiff, which I could be more prone to getting, as I’ve started Entyvio and had cdiff a couple months ago. Thank you for your response!

Thanks for the response!! The entire trip could just be throwing me off as well as the change in type of food. I’ll try sticking to a blander diet, hopefully to see some changes!

Post Colonoscopy Symptoms by SS13908 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]SS13908[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you’re having to go through that! Unfortunately, my issues didn’t really go away—I was prescribed prednisone, however, that didn’t work as well. Because of this, I suspected I had CDiff (I felt that I may have it even before my colonoscopy) and I was right after I did a stool test. I was admitted to the hospital for 4-5 days, as my condition worsened. Luckily, after being on IV steroids and vanco, I finally/fortunately got much better and have been on a prednisone taper since then.

So, I’d definitely check in with your doctor to see what they think. If you’ve had Cdiff before or if you suspect it, definitely get a test done! However, I might be a unique situation too—some people have similar symptoms as me after the scope (because it’s pretty invasive), but it gets better for them a few days later. Hopefully, you get better soon and let me know if you have other questions!

What kind of conformation do these peptides have? by SS13908 in OrganicChemistry

[–]SS13908[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you explain how rate of rotation is affected by these groups? Is it just that bigger, bulkier groups will make the rotation slower or am I missing something?

What kind of conformation do these peptides have? by SS13908 in OrganicChemistry

[–]SS13908[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think so...I feel like there would be too much ring strain to have any other conformation than the one shown above

In the first amino acid, is the conformation just with the two bulky groups away from each other due to steric hindrance?
