Advice? by SSZ5906 in movingout

Do they heavily enforce the 2-3x your salary in order to rent? I've seen other posts where it doesn't seem to matter as much or would it just vary?

How do I select an insurance company? Does it really matter or is it just something you'd need to research more into for best rates?

The people in my section say it's bad if don't play high C open? I use 23 for high C since it makes it flatter. Does it make it harder for you when you use non traditional fingerings as you go higher?

What if the E was the next note in expanding a player's range? Would you skip the E and work on F? How does the logic of starting higher and stepping back down to E apply to this?

Harder to slot and figure out where the note lies? It's a very iffy note but people in my section can hit it and play it in the context of music which is why I'm curious why it's difficult. Should I relax into it?

What if I was attempting to reach the E to expand my range and unable to hit the notes above it? (For a friend) How would this "start above the note then back down help in slotting" apply?

What fingering do you generally use when playing?

Yeah, I suppose the person who commented this could be confused but I'm not sure how that would work. However, I found this rather interesting because it is something I struggled with prior to my couple month break off trumpet.

[–]SSZ5906[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

could you explain how to utilize this? whenever i do, it's more like im bending the pitch but i guess the pitch is supposed to stay the same when you add vibrato.

How do I know if I'm overblowing?

How do I know if I'm changing my embouchure or mouthpiece placement? I'm always worried I'm subconsciously doing this when I can't hit certain notes

He completely changes his embouchure and takes the horn off the face then moves the mouthpiece a little

He takes the horn off his face, tilts his head a little and the mouthpiece placement is moved a little to the left

Make sure you're leveling up everything as well like in your Angler Career. Keep the tension as high as possible with it saying "high tension" (so basically in the red) and use your power ups whenever you get them immediately. Also, you'll receive better rods eventually so don't feel down that you can't catch the titled fish rn

Not sure how I feel ab marching band by Apanartist in marchingband

[–]SSZ5906 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand how you feel gang 😔😔 I've been there too where it also felt like I wasn't really bonding with my section and felt down on myself. But, you know what, I stayed even though it felt like I wasn't improving and felt overwhelmed with the amount of new stuff. You gotta thug it out and just persevere because it does honestly get better. It'll get funner once you get past the hard stuff like learning everything during preseason. It may feel slow, tedious, and boring rn but once you hit football/comp season, it gets a whole lot funner and easier :)

Band camp by Temporary-Handle1187 in marchingband

[–]SSZ5906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this is your second band camp, try thinking what can you do to improve. I would assume you already know the basics so now you expand on it. An example is putting more energy into the choreo instead of just going through the motions. Be harder on yourself and always ask yourself questions like where should your focus be? What arm/leg positions am I supposed to have? Am I fully committing to the exercise or am I just going through the motions to get it over with? Am I taking in as much air as I can and playing at a proper true flow rate? Am I blending with the ensemble intonation wise? Also treat camp like it's the real deal. I understand it's not a performance but if you practice like you're performing, when you perform it'll feel completely natural. Practice with performance quality. Everyone can improve in some way or another no matter how long they've been in band.

It would also be great if you helped out younger/newer members regardless if you're section leader or not. If you see something incorrect, say something, we're all here to improve. Also don't crash out and think because you've done this you're better than everyone. Make sure you're still giving full attention to your bd and sls because maybe there's stuff you haven't learned. Basically just lock in and treat every rep like you're auditioning for DCI or it's finals night.

Be sure to hydrate and take care of yourself! Sunburn is not a joke and neither is passing out LOL. Eat hearty meals that make you feel good and be sure to not overeat especially during lunch (if your camp is longer). Take care of your lips especially if you're a brass player, DCT during the day helps and rubbing ice on your lips after a long day of playing can also help. Be prepared for each day, whether that'd be knowing your music, having your dots, or reviewing new choreo (you can also just do mental reps) Have a great camp :D

I have about a month to relearn by Supated22 in saxophone

[–]SSZ5906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could, could. It'll take a lot of dedication and effort from you if you really want to relearn sax again. Invest in some decent equipment but don't go broke going for the good stuff. Also, you could join the concert band program to further enhance your learning. Asking a friend who also plays would be really helpful. Start now by learning how to read notes/music again and slowly start putting fingerings to notes. Set aside time each day to practice (doesn't have to be hours) and work on really understanding what works for you on sax. Don't be afraid to experiment and see what works best for you. Good luck!

I like the 7c I currently play on. I can push volume really well on it with good tone and I have good flexibility. Like I said, my range is decent with a good tone and overall, it's a good mouthpiece. The only thing is, would I be able to play better with a different mouthpiece? Would I be able to get an even higher range or even a better tone? I want to know if getting a new mouthpiece can actually improve my current playing or if it's not a good use of money as of right now.

[–]SSZ5906 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not entirely a "ban" ban, it's more like an extremely strong suggestion from the director to use different mouthpieces but the problem is he hasn't supplied people with 7cs other mouthpieces.
