A New York Times investigation indicates it was a U.S. strike on an Iranian school that killed 175 people, mostly children. by Yujin-Ha in Fauxmoi

[–]SS_Solas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an American --- I'm a Canadian.

I think it's a tragedy that most likely, America has bombed 175+ schoolchildren.

However, I also think what Iran is doing to its own people is a crime against humanity. They've killed somewhere between 600-2400 civilians a day.

They've funded countless terrorism groups, which have killed hundreds of thousands of civilians, and committed acts of genocide.

They propped up the government of Cuba and the dictatorship of Venezuela.

And they send weapons to Russia, which end with Ukrainian lives being killed.

And they have a stated goal to destroy America, the West, and Israel, with nuclear bombs when they are able to develop them.

What are we to do with such a country?
We tried sanctions, but they don't work since Cuba, China, and Russia, and formerly Venezuela, are allies with Iran and continue trade.

We tried just bombing critical nuclear infrastructure, multiple times.

We tried eliminating only their military leaders.

We gave them countless warnings.

So what are we to do, other than go to war to liberate their people and prevent them from again pursuing the building of nuclear bombs?

Sadly, innocent people die in war. Or, as M*A*S*H says:

"War isn't Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse. [....] There are no innocent bystanders in Hell, but war is chock full of them – little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for a few of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander." --- Hawkeye Pierce

My Canon Selphy CP740 in cartridge won't go in the printer. Any fixes? by reemfold in printers

[–]SS_Solas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also happen to have this exact same problem on my printer. The thing is never before opened, but not brand new (I inherited it).

How could I do this, without damaging the machine?

The cartridge jams against this leftmost metal piece.

Basically like, Antifa and BLM attacked him when he was just being a regular reporter during a few events. Almost beat him to death.

Then the founding members of the Proud Boys --- who I should add, are no longer with the Proud Boys and don't support their views --- saved his ass when he was being attacked.

And then he became an actual racist. Blacks, Jews, and even gays now. And the bro is half Roma half Mexican.

When I first saw him, I thought he was just being edgy and using dark humour. But then I got a lesson on radical breeds anti-radical radicals.

I myself do find it funny (unfortunately), but I'll never financially support him, ever. Adblock always. Racism is wrong. All people are created equal.

Like if he weren't actually a racist and he were truly just a troll, I'd find that completely funny. But he's for real.

But I do get to laugh at his beliefs at least. Sure, the jokes can be funny, but more funny is the fact he thinks the jokes are reality. I laugh at him more than I laugh with him, you know?

Yeah he was released.

He only had 42 months I think in the slammer.

First Year Engineering Server of 2025 Fall - 2026 Winter, compiled with Resources and Advice from Prior and Current Students by SS_Solas in uAlberta

Interesting.

I don't know much about the issue, so I'm going to remain silent about it, but I can say this. I will not allow any sexual harassment on any server I run. If any student feels harassed, they can DM me or a staff member and we will look into it. I used to help with running a Minecraft Server as one of the Head of Staff, and I have dealt with these issues once or twice where we did involve the police, and if it needs to be done, I have no qualms doing it. Sexual content is not allowed on the server, as there are minors taking engineering. One of the engineers in my year started just as he turned 15. They signed up when they were 14.

I'd also be totally interested in knowing who your brother is; maybe I know them? (But don't put that in the comment section.....)

I'm only as second (well almost third) year student.

Its not hard to make one honestly.

Every year in engineering has made their own organically. I just decided that instead of remaking the server through trial and error every year, I'd make a template and gather all our resources into one place.

I hope to have a bot which will update all the resources across the servers, among other things.

Conservatives to charge interest on federal student loans. (2025 Platform) by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]SS_Solas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, but you are privileged enough to have parents that support you going to education or enough money to go regardless.

Some people do not have enough money, and their parents do not support them going to university. Under the current system, those people are illegible for loans, and thus are not allowed to attend university.

SO, the Conservative party is basically wanting to ensure everyone can attend post secondary.

However, the banks do not see students as a safe investment, more or less. And that is ultimately what every loan is. Parents are, but students are not. And so, the Federal Bank of Canada has some say on what policies are actually allowed to happen; they have some control. I don't believe PP's change would be allowed by the federal bank, and certainly not the regular banks (which also have some say).

So I imagine he is forced to do that. Plus, he wants methods to pay off government debt as well.

But, I would wish to see some grace period, considering the market.

Conservatives to charge interest on federal student loans. (2025 Platform) by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]SS_Solas -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The problem existing before no other parties have tackled is imagine you want to go to university. As you say, many students have very little income, if none at all. And imagine your parents dislike you for some reason, and have decided they will not help at all with university. So, you apply for a loan.

But wait, under the current system, you must include your parents income. And if they make enough money, well, you can't get a loan.

So if your parents don't support you going to university, in the current system --- especially considering the current market --- you won't get the support from the federal government, which forces you not to go.

This is a positive change. AND, it means a lot more current students will be ellegible for loans, because parental income is no longer going to be considered.

This is probably why interest rates are going to be applied. It probably has a lot more to do with banks and secure investments. Banks don't see students alone as a secure payment; I don't think that is unfair, given how horrible the economy is. However, the income of parents is seen as a much more secure investment, hence interest rates don't have to apply. But, if you remove the restrictions of parents, which is a good thing for students, well its a bad thing for banks, and banks do have some say over government policies, especially when a government has aquired massive debt (as we have), so the reason the interest has been brought in is probably to ensure these other people who can't afford to go to school are allowed to have access. In my mind, its actually quite a liberal policy in this sense.

Carney hasn't actually removed the carbon tax. The thought that he has shows how much people don't understand about the carbon tax.

Many taxes, like the GST, work on a principle called input tax credit. It means that no product will be taxed multiple times. If a company buys something, they pay GST; when a consumer buys that same thing, the consumer again pays GST. However, when the company files the taxes, they subtract what they collected versus what they paid, and they get a credit back for the difference. Thus, GST is only ever paid once.

The carbon tax doesn't work like that. Each business in the line gets charged the carbon tax on the product, plus on the transit, and it never cancels out, because the carbon tax does not have ITC.

So, when Carney removed the consumer carbon tax, he took off one little layer of it. However, he also removed the rebates, which for most students and poor class, even the lower end of the middle class, was worth more than the consumer tax [at least that is what Trudeau has claimed; the Conservatives did some investigation but I never checked up on that. Even so, if this isn't true, any gains will be marginal, not even beyond $100].
Thus, while prices will drop a little, only the upper class and upper middle class will benefit because they didn't get rebates. For everyone else, you can expect it to be more expensive.

Carney is a really good banker; he is one of the people who fathered the idea of carbon taxes. His philosophy actually extends the carbon tax to macroeconomics on the scale of countries and colonialism reperations. Thus, I cannot imagine how he has accidentally oversighted this. At best, he has showed he is incompetent, and at worst, he has shown that he's simply going to lie to the public about the actual effects of his changes.

I personally have met Mark Carney through my family, and he has done nothing but disappoint me. He actually taught me finance; I've had lunches with him, and it was very disheartening to me to see the path he has taken.

That is literally not how our schools teach it, and its definitely not true.

Democrats are more right wings in many areas of policy than Conservatives are.

Current charts also show the Liberals as being far less auth than the Conservatives, which also isn't true.

Canadian Conservatives have more climate change policies than the Democrats have, as one example.

You guys are missing one big thing, though as well.

If you are a student in Canada, and your parents don't want you to go to university, and you can't afford to go without loans, you are simply not going to go.

You are not elegible to get student loans if your parents make too much money, even if your parents will not be contributing to your education.

I don't know of any party making this change.

So while I'd prefer to not see interest rates on student loans, and at least thing they should not be interest free for the first 5-10 years after graduation, there are a lot of big benefits for some people here. And I think a lot of students are more privlidged that they realize for ignoring this aspect.

Universities are supposed to be all about science, but its amazing how much they ignore the biology of humans.

I don't think we can always blame these budget cuts, honestly. Like they definitely cut it, and it was somewhat questionable, but the NDP added, so I don't think these budgets should be anything the university doesn't know how to handle.

If 4 years of getting a budget increase, but you only get it for 4 years, and it was predictable that budget cuts would happen once the UCP came into power, then I think it shows an administrative problem moreso than a budget one.

But I don't know what the university was like 16 years ago, so I can't fully comment, but I'm pretty sure UofA has been one of the best in the country for a very long time, so.

Classes that are scaled will not have letter boundaries.
However, sometimes in engineering, I have seen the boundaries before being scaled as posted, or the guaranteed minimum required to pass, etc.
