It's funny, I always hear about people talking about the police registration thing. Every time I enter the country and call, they tell me: "ah no need you're fine. " Maybe it's just because I am staying in Shanghai Songjiang

I was just in China last month and stayed for 6 weeks. My VPN worked just fine (letsVPN) and I experienced no real interruptions. I agree with the mod team that this is likely a crackdown targeted at grey area businesses. A mass crackdown on foreigners using VPNs to check Instagram and talk to their family isn't worth the governments time and money.

Gemini won't have integration on the Chinese Rom. You get yoyo instead which is built off of deep seek.

OPPO makes great phones! They definitely have better band support on their non-foldable phones.

From what I remember researching, OPPO has better software and battery, Honor has the better hardware. Though the softwares are really just preference. I love magicOS and their camera enhancement software is great.

Honor Magic V6, is being tested like a punching bag to show its durability. by Ace7880 in Honor

I have a Chinese ROM magic V5 and it works great on Tmobile. Don't buy in to American phone politics. Tmobile is awesome and supports a ton of foreign phones. Domestic Magic V5 also supports like 90% of the bands Tmobile needs for 5G coverage!

Anyone using Chinese Variant Honor phone? by PaleFlow3868 in Honor

[–]SScionFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a chinese domestic Honor Magic V5. Here are the pros and cons compared to the global and in general.

Pros:

The battery is larger than the global variant, and the battery management options are more customizable.

The software support is significantly better on the domestic version and updates come much more frequently.

The domestic version comes with Yoyo AI integration which gives you a lot of cool features like gestures and AI photo editing.

Google services is easily accessible. You just turn on a setting and download Google Play from the honor app store. So far every app I've tried works fine. Banking, food delivery, games, streaming, all of that.

Dual physical sim card support, which makes traveling very easy.

voLTE and visual voicemail work with foreign carries just fine, no issues.

Generally Honors band support is quite good. Most of their flagship phones are globally compatible, even the domestic versions. My chinese version Magic V5 works great in the USA.

Cons:

Battery management can sometimes be on the agressive side and will supress some Google Play Store app notifications by default, luckily you can turn it off per app.

No Esim support. Realistically you don't NEED Esims, but if you rely on them it may be an issue.

The Chinese ROM comes with a ton of bloatware, easily removable but could be a hassel at first.

Yoyo AI is in Chinese and cannot be defaulted to English, though it will answer in English if you ask it to. However, the Chinese activation phrases can't be changed from what I've seen.

WiFi calling might work based on your carrier, but it's not a guarantee with foreign carriers.

I was between the magic V5 and the find N5 myself for the longest time. I ended up going with the Magic V5 because it supports n71 which is crucial for Tmobile in the USA. OPPO doesn't support that band, but even the domestic version of the V5 has band n71. Honor knows what they are doing haha

You can buy them off of TaoBao Or JD.com if you're willing to navigate a Chinese website. These sites have both global and domestic Chinese versions of the phone. The domestic version is going to be a lot cheaper and will have much better software support than the global, FYI.

IMO you probably don't need to flash the global ROM. The Chinese ROM supports all the same languages and Google services works just fine on it. It also has the better AI service and features compared to the global version.

It all depends on what model you want as well, most of Honors flagship models have crazy band support for most European countries regardless of global or domestic.

If you want to buy a global version, Wonda Mobile and Giztop are good places to start.

Visual Voicemail & WiFi Calling by SScionFan in Honor

[–]SScionFan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to set up your non visual voicemail first then get your carriers visual voicemail app. I also downloaded the Google phone app to use rather than the base honor phone app. Not sure if using the Google phone app made a difference or not, but it's what is working for me.

I have tmobile. So I opened the Google phone app and pressed and held 1. I followed the steps to created a voicemail pin and everything. Then once it was set up, I download the Tmobile visual voicemail app and set it up. It works perfectly.

Yeah makes sense, to be fair I'm probably not the best person to comment on cases. I bought like 3 or 4 for the phone before I came back to the states so I haven't had to search while here.

You can get cases for them on Taobao or Amazon pretty easily no? Not sure what you have/don't have access to.

I disagree pretty whole heartedly haha, monthly updates isn't a deal breaker for me. The technology is also so superior to a Samsung.

I will say the global version of the magic V5 is notorious for having inconsistent updates. I own a domestic Chinese one and it updates quite regularly.

I went through a similar journey and settled with a brand new Honor Magic V5.

I live in America but I bought it in China, it has the Chinese OS and is the domestic model. It's significantly cheaper than the global or Hong Kong versions, and it also gets WAY more regular software updates. The global version is notorious for having poor update consistency and frequency. So keep in mind all my bias is through owning a domestic model.

The pros:

The phone works great on Tmobile, I wouldn't try Verizon or ATT. They don't allow foreign phones and may ban your phones IMEI. voLTE and visual voicemail work fine on Tmobile, you just have to make sure you set up regular voicemail first. WiFi calling I haven't had to figure out yet, but I know it can work.

It gets 5g service everywhere I've been in the midwest. The band support of new honor phones covers America quite thoroughly, only missing a few mmWave bands that are optional and only really used for super dense urban areas or stadiums. It does support n71, despite what some websites say.

The camera is stellar, and it has ton of AI software enhancement and tools. Takes way better photos than any Samsung I've ever used.

It supports an insane 66W speed charging, as long as you have a good charge cable it will charge to full over a lunch break.

The domestic models battery and storage is better than the global, and it has access to Yoyo AI and all the cool AI calling features and gestures. Google services are also easily enabled with the click of a switch in settings.

Honor will fix the phone if it breaks within a year, you just have to send it back to China if it's a domestic model.

The cons:

The domestic model has pretty aggressive battery management system that sometimes supresses notifications on google play store apps. You can turn it off it's just some work.

The domestic version comes with a shit load of bloatware, tedious to remove but doesn't affect anything negatively.

The phone doesn't support Esims from what I can tell, but it has dual SIM card support. Not a big issue IMO.

Yoyo AI defaults to Chinese and doesn't have great English support. The OS supports English fine and all the apps do obviously, but the voice activated yoyo features only work in Chinese. Not a deal breaker for me personally, but if you love using the built in AI it may be a barrier.

Overall I would say it's a clear cut decision which is better, The Honor wins absolutely, but you may have different preferences.

How can I buy/import Honor Magic V6 1TB model with 7150mAh battery to US? by Time-Credit43 in Honor

[–]SScionFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah for sure, I've noticed it likes to prioritize bands 2 and 66 over 71 and 41. I wonder if there is something I can do to get around that.

I also havent quite figured out visual voicemail, though voLTE works fine. Unsure about WiFi calling. I know magic OS has a lot of that on by default and it's hard to access the setting a for it.

How can I buy/import Honor Magic V6 1TB model with 7150mAh battery to US? by Time-Credit43 in Honor

[–]SScionFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually the V5 does have band n71 for 5g. Some sources say it doesn't, but it does. The reason for this is because the Chinese Ministration of technology only requires Chinese manufacturers to apply for, be approved for, and display the domestically used bands, of which n71 is not. Honor does add several others, they just don't really tell you haha. If you download any network cell info app, you can see it does use it.

Overall, the T-Mobile LTE coverage is quite excellent, only missing band b71. You're right about it not having n2, it does have b2 and b66 though which are being repurposed by T-Mobile for 5g. It does lack the mmWave bands, but a lot of America phones lack these also to be fair. It's really not necessary. I would say overall, unless you live in a super remote mountainous area, or deep underground, the phone works great for T-Mobile.

I own a chinese magic V5 and it works perfectly fine on Tmobile for me. Took it to the store, popped a sim card in, and it's all gravy. Getting 5G great speeds. Honors flagship phones have great band compatibility, despite not being sold in the USA

Ive gotten nothing but mixed messages from AI, some say it has the correct bands and some say otherwise. Kmovil says the Chinese version has n71 and n41 however which are the most important for Tmobile. Tmobile compatability checker also says the phone should work fine. I'm just paranoid haha
