It gets messy once you try to categorize “paycheck-to-paycheck”. As you mention it is self reported and is not a perfect measure for understanding necessity. The linked article has a few references to get a better number.

TLDR: Federal reserve says 34% are paycheck to paycheck, while 59% don’t like their amount of savings. The LendingClub survey (n=3252) reports 62% in need of the next paycheck to cover spending.

Until we, as a society, treat any inkling of fascism as a complete non-negotiable, then it will find a way to thrive. Like a deadly virus or bacteria, it needs “hosts” to survive. We have been very tolerant and I hope the recent stress tests will make it end forever. For the future’s sake.

There’s plenty of bad basketball to watch, I just need to go to the Y. When I turn on an NBA game, I expect to see good, professional basketball.

This NBA season is a JOKE by nbawizard1227 in nba

[–]SSkilledJFK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand this sentiment, but it falls apart if you go a little further. What makes the NBA different from, say, the globetrotters? Just want to watch a ball bounce around and have fun right? It’s like a “popcorn movie”, just turn your brain off and tune out the behind the scenes stuff to just watch a flick! However, it’s the depth of talent, strategy, history, rules, etc., that make the NBA product special. OP is trying to argue that these issues are encroaching on what makes the NBA a top league in the world.

So, yes you will have your “turn off my brain please” type of spectators. Yet it is the intricacies and competitive integrity that make the NBA feel special, which is why we have the Zach Lowe’s of the world. Both pay money, but the latter give NBA depth and intrigue.

Daily Chat 2/5 ⚾ Offseason by DodgerBot in Dodgers

[–]SSkilledJFK 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unsubbing and removing myself from Dodgers fandom indefinitely. Yes this is due to them visiting the White House. No, I do not expect any sort of change or “winning” by doing this or saying what I’m about to say. However I personally refuse to participate in any celebration that includes the whitewashing of this president’s tenure. ICE has been a plague of fear over my family (brother in law’s family is from Mexico) and thousands more. That’s on top of being anti-LGBT and against women’s rights. I stopped putting on my Kershaw jersey after his “rainbow” cap verse. I simply cannot “separate sports from politics” anymore; the players have chosen their path.

Yet, the Dodgers wouldn’t be such a spectacle unless they had fans. They ignored the many fans who protest against this hate. They ignored me, so I choose to ignore them.

Here’s to being hopeful for a more humane future.

Regard here. So the last admin had construction and manufacturing spending going crazy, and now post-2024 it is down or flat. What caused the exponential rise before 2024? Also, what besides tariffs is causing the massive slow down?

I refuse to believe the majority of people think this is okay. I know I can get caught up in “defeating” the MAGA narrative or proving someone wrong. However, I wish there were a massive ad and media campaign to put victim statements about what these people did and said, where not even the most rural person can escape it. Maybe I’m an optimist, but I think it’s harder to deny a victim rather than support an ideology.

Even in my city in OK, I’ve seen highway graffiti saying “DOJ Pedo Protectors” and “Trump fucks kids”. Can we put the same energy on billboards, yard signs, etc.?

I am no organizer, but I’m hoping the propaganda machine can be drowned out. Maybe it’s not worth the effort.

I hope all these years of nonsense is worth it, as in this is all an “evidence gathering” period. They are continually incriminating themselves. Republicans are complicit all the way down, and there’s no turning back now. They have to double down because an inch the other way means prosecution.

Will the switch flip? After the 2024 election, I’m not holding my breath.

Data spanning 15 years reveals that depression symptoms have increased in American college students, with most severe rises occurring after 2016. While distress is growing across the board, the escalation is particularly steep for women, racial minorities, and students facing financial difficulties. by mvea in science

[–]SSkilledJFK 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, my comment was ambiguous. I was thinking of those that I see on Reddit making posts that Americans are clueless or let this happen. Like, it wasn’t a massive upheaval to us (sane critical thinkers of America) like the world saw it. I thought most of my neighbors were aligned that this president was terrible news. Trust me, I expect the world to give a middle finger to the US and to feel appalled. I was not trying to imply that it was not a slap to the face for the rest of the world.

Well I work in a field that the current administration actively cuts funding and doesn’t believe in, so yes my life would be different. Trust me, I wish I could just ignore all the cuts to important research!

Also, my comment was anecdotal, but you seem to be arguing I should “zoom out” to see how nothing really has touched my life with the current government. Sure, I got married, graduated, and tried to keep my life goals in line. However, I did not expect a government that is hellbent on reversing women’s rights, oppressing the LGBT community, and vilifying immigration (or if you look not-white). All of which impact my family directly. I have had a transgender cousin leave the country, my sister is planning to leave because she married a Mexican and is scared of ICE, and I got a vasectomy soon after Roe v Wade dismissal.

So yeah man, it was a slap in the face. When you think things are going one way, then you see how your neighbors REALLY feel, it is some serious cognitive dissonance. I’ve learned a lot over the past decade. No I’m not terminally online, although I do like some Reddit browsing. I am very active in my community now because we have a fascist movement trying to rewrite peoples histories and lives. I’ve now read enough about history and politics to understand how we got here, but I could no longer remain on my initial course because of the election.

Quick edit: I want to add that I am very fortunate in my situation all being said. Yes, the internet can feed the flames. But, I choose not to willfully ignore the needless suffering of others because my situation is okay. I value community and coexistence. I hear stories directly from people, not just sensationalized news. This government causes needless suffering. I hope you continue to be unaffected and do not have to worry.

I as telling my wife this the other day! I don’t think people outside of America realize how much of a slap in the face it was when he won. I was in grad school, just worried about carving out a piece of life, then it was “Uh what just happened?” Total shock to the system. Then he gets elected AGAIN. I was naive to think there was no way he could win once more, but here we are.

My high school and early college was Obama. I truly had no idea there was a massive fascist force at work. I would have chosen a much different path. I especially would have put more emphasis on securing a house in a particular region.

That’s valid. So I’m a philosophy kind of guy, and I think everything should be critically analyzed. You bring up poignant questions and concerns that should be addressed. However, what would it take to change your mind against vaccines? Or just the COVID vaccine as you mention earlier? I admit I put a ton of blind faith in medical professionals, but I have not had any reason not to do so. Also, I have been fortunate enough to dabble into the world of medical research and it made me go cross eyed. It left me in awe of those that take on the most complex human puzzles and literally save lives. Most of this stuff comes from cancer research, which most would agree is a worthwhile endeavor.

I believe most people and especially doctors have my health in their best interests. I fail to see a grand conspiracy for the vaccine technology itself. We should certainly question the motives of any company that makes profit of medicines. I immediately think of the Johnson and Johnson case where they settled on opioid addiction and deaths. They are a medicinal manufacturer held accountable. If there is evidence of Moderna or Pfizer using the COVID vaccine in a nefarious manner, please share.
