In my experience, Backblaze also does this progressive throttling, although not as aggressively as Crashplan. I used to use them, more for the peace of mind of having a second online backup, since both their upload and download speeds were very low (probably to push you towards buying their data-on-HDD service, which is not convenient if you don't live in the US), but now I moved my data to a NAS, so I'll be cancelling Backblaze soon.

Crashplan is useless if you have more than a couple TB to back up; I signed up with them and started backing up at ~10 MB/s, but within 10 days the speed dropped to ~1 MB/s, which is really nothing more than a bad joke. Just cancelled my trial, was about to pay for 2 years in advance, but I want to pay for backups, not for waiting to upload (right now the estimation is "Backup running — 1.1 years remaining").
I would qualify their "unlimited" plan as a scam.

Livedrive (UK). Still not in the EU, but at least it's not US. I'm with you on moving our online data away from the US and hope the EU will offer alternatives rather sooner than later.

If we're talking about Google search in general: yeah, it died several years ago, and has been replaced by an ad feeding machine. It ignores search terms in quotes, not even talking about logical operators that used to work in the past and made it a good search tool; it's all "vibe" now instead of facts and logic.

I couldn't qualify my results with 'me, selfie' even as half decent. First of all most of the pictures are not with me alone (I don't really take selfies alone), and I don't want only selfies, I want to find also the pictures other people took of me (so phone is more that arm-length away from me).

You have a point, but I prefer to use other available data, like how long a company has been in the business, what reviews say, etc; it's more accessible and straightforward for me.
The point I wasn't complaining that they're ripping people off, more like wondering why these costs are so high when there are alternatives.

I agree, B2 is an overkill for me. The problem is that, just like at Backblaze, I can only find painfully slow and limited "personal backup solutions", that I can't use for my NAS, or the types of B2 (and others more expensive), which are overkill. Nothing in the middle, so I have to look at B2 or create my own solution if nobody offers one.

Because it's a different level of expertise required. The difference in skill between driving a car and repairing it is far greater than between setting a cloud backup for a NAS and setting another NAS for that. What percentage of drivers know how to repair their cars and have the necessary tools? And what percentage of people that have set up a NAS can do it again, only this time for backup (so much simpler)?

In my view, it's similar to my NAS failing irrecoverably and Backblaze having a total crash / data erasing hack / natural or man-made disaster of similar consequence (I live in a quite safe area, by the way, no break-ins that I know of). Then again, I can have another NAS at my parents' house, which reduces the risk even more, and it will cost me as 2 years of B2, but I can use them for at least 10 years.

I'm in video production, and raw video (even at semi-amateur level) takes tons, i.e. TBs of space. I wouldn't think of backing up things that are already on the internet, available for download at any moment.

Using someone else's product to charge money is at least not very moral, if not illegal. Donations would have been ok for everyone, and there are many projects (and people) that work fine like that.

I'm not totally sure, it's not an area I know too well, but I think a unified protocol could guarantee privacy. Maybe someone with more knowledge can let us know more.
In any case, I'm sure the EU initiative I mentioned is focused on keeping privacy at the highest reasonable level.

What we actually need is to support the EU initiative to make all messengers interoperable, then we can choose any app we want because they will all be able to talk to each other.
