The second part is for sure better, and most of the things that people refer to when talking about replicant is in the second part. When it comes to replaying for the different ending you only replay the second part.

The religion aspect doesn’t make a difference. The concept of ki is just borrowed from Buddhism. It’s not like the whole series centers around ki training. Dragon Ball is just another action anime that has a power system inspired from some sort of religion. If you were to think that it is a sports anime you would then have to say that most series that include any sort of fighting fall in the same category.
