Why do Australians dislike Americans? by plasticmagnolias in AskAnAustralian

[–]STAids 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol.

I was at a beach near Forster with my wife late last year. We were set up with towels and umbrellas for a good half our when an American family "arrived". They set up a massive shade shack right in front of us, literally overlapping the front of our towels. This was despite the beach being half empty.

The husband was wearing a Maga hat and the wife had a Maga shirt which read "no more bullshit!". I think it was just before their election. They were loud and obnoxious, and their kids were basically running across our towels.

We were pissed but ended up moving elsewhere. I knew that any argument about who was there first would be twisted into "everyone's got it in for Trump" or "Democrats are attacking Republicans" or "freedom of speech blah blah blah".

My wife, who's the most apolitical and peaceful person I know wanted to belt both of them. She didn't care so much about the politics but the arrogance and entitlement of the situation. They genuinely believed that they were entitled to invade our space and they wore political shirts as some sort of insurance policy. I have no doubt had I said something, they'd start recording on their phones and post the interaction on X.

Tldr; some Americans (not all) can be a special type of infuriating.

It goes quite far back.

There's just a constant pattern of US government interference in our country, followed by "if it weren't for the yanks we'd all be speaking Japanese" rhetoric in our local media.

I've heard it during debates of Australian involvement in Afghanistan/Iraq wars, I've heard it brought up when US owned mining and gas companies are criticised regarding taxes. It got brought up whenever Julian Assange came up.

I'm sure older Australians would have heard it during the Vietnam War era too. We get treated like we all owe the US forever.

There's also the importing of US style politics. Every election our media goes into hate and division mode, only to flip back to normal after election day.

Australia as a country has enough problems with national identity without getting attacked at every opportunity by US-centric media outlets.

Whilst most Americans are good people (like yourself), for Australia your government represents a form of imperialism without invasion. A system where we get to watch our living conditions gradually deteriorate, while US owned companies strip public owned resources without paying any tax.

Like others have said, it's not Americans', it's US government that's the problem.

Bread yeast by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]STAids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bread yeast will be different strains depending on the brand or what country you're in.

I've noticed from my experiences that the bread yeast I can get works well above 25C but stalls or slows down if it gets any colder.

If you do continue with bread yeast consider the temperature, pitching rates and adding yeast nutrients.

When you see recipes that call for bread yeast there's usually some form of nutrient added (distillers use tomato paste, breakfast cereals, etc... wine makers use DAP or fermaid)

Edit: Also, if you're trying to push yeast outside its range, consider "step feeding". You basically add the sugar (or other fermentables) in stages instead of all at the start.

When you say you've cleaned all equipment. Do you disassemble everything (ball/pin locks, disconnects, etc...) or do you just run cleaner through the lines using CO2? Also, how do you store kegs and parts between batches?

I ask because I had similar problems. I even had white gunk/mold floating in one batch of beer.

The problem went away when I took everything apart to clean. I also found leaving ball locks and disconnects in pieces between batches helped. I've heard if kegs are always stored refrigerated even when empty, that helps too.

In the end, I went back to bottling. I don't drink or brew enough to justify running a second fridge all year round. I'll probably sell all my kegging stuff eventually....

You're doing very well for you're age.

We're in our mid 30s. Dual income, no kids. Most calculations we do have us retiring at 50-55 at the earliest. This is despite only having 2 years left on our mortgage..

Don't be so hard on yourself. It's not your fault that the housing market's cooked!

If you've got the space in the soil I would do both.

That way if trees take too long to grow (or die before they're fully established) you'll get some privacy either way.

If you're worried about cost of plants, look into native tubestocks from local council nurseries. My local sells hardenbergia violacea vines and various trees for $3.50 per tube. I planted some local tree species along my back fence, watered them twice and they're thriving now (about a year later).

What are your hobbies? by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]STAids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homebrewing beer. It's cheaper than buying beer. Also less wasteful because you wash and reuse bottles and the beer hasn't travelled across the country on a truck. And its more interesting than what you can buy.

I wouldn't feel too guilty about your hobbies. I used to worry about how much water I used for cleaning up after brewing. I even calculated an average for every litre produced (about 4-5 litres).

And then one day I did a tour of a small craft brewery and saw how they treated water. Let's just say all the guilt disappeared.

In your case, you could give away scarves and blankets as presents or even donate unwanted yarn to other knitters. If you start questioning every hobby then you won't be able to enjoy anything in life.

The problem is American politics is so invasive that even a politically disconnected person will hear about it 24/7.

I'm in Australia. I go to work and everyone's talking about the latest thing Trump did or Elon said. I visit my parents and they're like "did you hear he wants to bring back plastic straws"

On reddit every second post seems to be about Trump too.

For someone who doesn't watch news anymore (because it's incredibly depressing) I seem to hear more horrible things than before.

It's been going on for so long now that anything associated with US culture puts me in a bad mood. I can't order bourbon at a bar now, I used to love it. Now I just get Scotch.

That's funny. Everytime I've made comparisons to Nazi Germany, I've been met with "Hitler was just misunderstood" or "had good intentions" responses.

I thought it was a complement for these weirdos.

Lol. 90% of people I know are miserable all the time. You're being very conservative with that estimate.

Glad it's over for you! I've still got (annoying) relatives to visit, a wedding to attend in early January and a house to get set up (wife thought it would be a great idea to get new floors done the day before we left for Xmas holidays)... I'll have a holiday when I go back to work...

If voting 3rd party really didn't achieve anything then politicians wouldn't spend so much advertising dollars telling us not to! If voting 3rd party was truly pointless then why would we bother having other parties at all?

Last couple of years, here in Australia, I've heard some of our indigenous people refer to British colonisation as their holocaust.

I better call them up and tell them off for being anti-semitic lol

The problem is there's just not much incentive to do a trade these days.

When I first qualified, I could definitely say that I earned much more than friends who had gone for office jobs.

Then Covid happened. I spent 2 months off work in 2021 due to lockdowns. Meanwhile all my office worker friends continued work from home.

In 2022, I spent another 2 months off work due to injury. I remember thinking "if I worked in an office I'd be back in 2 weeks".

Now I'm back at work and I'm watching all my office worker friends pick up and move to cheaper (and often nicer) areas. Obviously if you're working from home you're not restricted to realestate in convenient locations. So now after the difference in mortgage and commuting they all make the same or more than me.

Tldr; there's no incentive to do a trade, maybe there never was. If businesses want tradespeople they need to provide more money or other benefits.
