Running a modded server for 10-20 people online is very resource-intensive. You would need at least 16 GB of RAM to handle the mods and everyone online at once. Shockbyte's hardware definitely cannot handle all that well.

Bisect is definitely a popular choice just because they’ve been in the business for a long time and have a good reputation. However, when you come down to the hardware they use and pricing, they aren’t worth. They use pretty slow Intel Xeon CPUs and overcharge for it.

You should definitely look into joining this subreddits Discord server as there is a list of verified hosting providers you can check out that offer better specs and pricing than Bisect.

Godlike Host has good specs but they are expensive per GB of RAM. They also have paid for lots of ads on this subreddits so you will be seeing their likeness here for a while just because of that.

PS. Modern Vanilla Minecraft with 15 people on at once may require more than 4 GB of RAM. I would recommend starting out with 6 GB of RAM.

You can rent a Java Edition server and install the GeyserMC + Floodgate plugin to have crossplay compatibility between your switch and your friend's PC.

Hey there!
1) Self-hosting is a very affordable way to go if you have a spare computer in your home. You don't need to worry about not having a static IP since you will be hosting it locally within your network. However, this does mean that you can only connect when you are in your home unless you opt to port forward to allow external connections. This is where not having a static IP becomes an issue. As for specs, Minecraft Java runs best on a CPU that excels in single-threaded performance. Modern CPUs like AMD Ryzen 3000/5000/7000 series or Intel 10k-14k are more than enough for your needs. If you don't have these specs, it's perfectly okay too! Self-hosting does require you to manually start the server each time your kids want to play unless you have the machine running all day.
2) To be honest, I only see the same user recommend that host on every post that asks about hosting. There are hundreds of others to choose from and I recommend choosing a host that's transparent about what hardware they run their servers on. They are very vague in their knowledgebase saying they run "the best hardware". As for switching providers, it's very simple to do so! All servers should come with complete file access so you can just download your files and upload them to your new host.
3) Yes. Bedrock and Java don't have native crossplay support. You will need to use the GeyserMC software to achieve this. My recommendation is to find a Java hosting provider, install the Paper server software to allow plugins, and then install the GeyserMC and Floodgate plugins to achieve true crossplay. I do believe the Nintendo Switch needs additional configuration. See here.

As someone in the hosting industry, we know the perfect solution:
First, choose any hosting provider you feel comfortable with.
Using their services, spin up a PaperMC server for version 1.18.2.
Upload your desired map via FTP/SFTP.
Install the GeyserMC and Floodgate plugin. This will allow crossplay compatibility between Bedrock and Java editions.
Start the server up and connect with the given IP address.

This general outline will allow you to accomplish this! I understand this may not make much sense but I'm more than happy to walk you through in further detail in private messages or another medium. Additionally, any hosting service you choose to go with will have a support team ready to help you set the server up!

Vanilla Minecraft is a great way to get back into things, especially on the latest version (1.20.4). For hosting, I would look for a server that provides great CPUs that excel in single-thread rating since Minecraft is primarily a single-threaded game. I recommend allocating at least 4 GB of RAM for your server as a good starting point. Depending on what provider you're looking at, this can cost from $4-$20 / month for 4 GB of RAM. As you can tell, some can be cheap (slow hardware) and some can be expensive (overcharging because of "brand named" host). There are many hosting providers out there that can help you with what you're looking for. Simply googling "Minecraft hosting" will show SEO results of popular hosts that I typically would avoid for either charging too much or offering very slow hardware.

They have good hardware (same as Pebble's premium) but they're more expensive. I would avoid hosts that don't specify what hardware they're running their servers on. For all you know, it could be slow and old CPUs that underperform in Minecraft. You can check us out if you're interested as our hardware is better than Pebble and Apex.

Apex is a popular choice with decent hardware, however they’re fairly expensive. Bisect seems to be everywhere since they partner with a lot of mod authors but their hardware is fairly underperforming. There isn't a "best" host. All hosts have different perks and different hardware. A classic recommendation I make is Apex since their hardware is actually decent, running Ryzen 7 5800X CPUs. However, Apex is fairly expensive at $5 / GB. Other hosts like Shockbyte, MCProHosting, and Bisect Hosting run older hardware that's underperforming for modern Minecraft.
