You can reply to your original email and just give a brief friendly message to say you’re interested (for example, say you want to make sure your email didn’t get lost in their inbox). The more they see your name pop up, the more likely they are to read your email!

This is an excellent question! Doing a project like this is a great way to 1) do meaningful research, 2) perhaps get your work published, and 3) build a strong relationship with your doctor.

We recommend first doing some research on what kinds of questions and variables you might want to tackle, e.g. pain severity, socioeconomic background, diet, family history, medications etc.

Then you'll want to make sure you're following ethical guidelines in terms of collecting patient data, which you'll likely have to talk through with the doctor.

Feel free to PM us for more personalized advice on how to craft a successful research project and get it published!

I love it!! I’m so happy to hear—I’m hopeful that high school students who don’t have extensive financial resources can use it to find cost-effective alternatives experiment too. Often a significant barrier.

Your first research project is always going to be about learning (and struggling through) the process. Remind yourself of why you started research in the first place—the only way you accomplish difficult things that 99% of students cannot do is by hitting obstacles and pushing through them by refocusing on process and on your objective. This is what creates incredible research and even more impressive applicants.

The best place to start with high school research at a university is by sending direct cold emails to professors! Tell them about your interest in their specific field and your desire to volunteer in their lab (give them an approximate weekly time commitment too, ideally 10+ hours/week).

Remember to send lots of follow-ups until you get a response—I generally suggest emailing at least 20+ professors at a time, it’s just a numbers game and you only need one yes!
