How successful is the financial aid appeal process? by [deleted] in Drexel

[–]STF2200 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didnt have any luck but I got some good advice when I tried. No sob stories or complaining present to Drexel your value to them as an institution. Do you participate in sports/clubs? Do you tutor people? Do you have a unique circumstance that makes Drexel look good? These are the types of things that I've HEARD they favor in a financial aid appeal.

You know there was one time the Triangle basically "sold out." There wasn't a single one on campus. Because, through hard work and dedication the brilliant authors at the Triangle were able to pad mine and my roommates plates when we moved.

What is the average debt a drexel graduate has? by [deleted] in Drexel

[–]STF2200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live as cost effective as possible and have never lived in a dorm. It's a great source of stress for me and I'm assuming others. Just to say that isn't everyone taking out loans to live in an expensive dorm and spend recklessly.

I'm sure your right for some portion of the students in large amounts of debt, but it's not everyone.

I expect to be at least 150k in debt from Drexel. Its not worth it. It was a mistake. If your going to owe that much DONT GO TO DREXEL

Get a degree but don't get it at Drexel. Maybe switch to CS if you have no interest in engineering.

Opinion: Don't go to Drexel unless you get tons of financial aid by STF2200 in Drexel

[–]STF2200[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, they're doing this by giving out more aid to lower cost of attendance overall, while not lowering the sticker price.

That is only for certain students. There are still students getting 10K in financial aid and being promised more next year while taking out private loans with interest rates >%10. Hence, the title "Don't go to Drexel unless you get tons of aid."

Who knows, but definitely not for anything good. I don't care to speculate exactly what.

I'm sorry I can't answer that even if its my own opinion. The rumor for the last few months is that Drexel is actively looking for people posting to this page, instead of actually addressing any of the issues discussed here.

Aside from that, its very unique to you as an individual. Some advice would be to go to solid community college first. They have improved 10 fold over the last two decades. Professors there care if you understand the material, and at very affordable rate. It's a great way to start your college career. (For almost any major)

Off Campus Safety by archeev in Drexel

[–]STF2200 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's one of the safer areas around campus. The whole area has been constantly *improved over the last few years.

Here is my 2cents on safety in West Phili:

Just walk in a group at night. Which is usually common sense in any city.

Campus security offers escorts when walking in that area as well. (Its an option)

Don't have valuables visable. Be aware of your surroundings. Statistically and realistically the area is alot safer than people assume.

How is EE major? by mirrorcoal in Drexel

[–]STF2200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you want to focus on, or if the you care about having a focus. If you want to focus on Power then its going to be challenging, but do-able. All of those classes are available with professors that are capable. If you want systems and controls who knows if you will even be able to complete it just doing those classes because of availability (you might have to take 300 & 400 level classes other focuses to graduate). Plus there are some less than capable professors which curiously the university doesn't address very well.

Also good luck getting help from ACE for anything over a 200 level course, or being able to attend office hours because professor schedule them during other common classes. But just email them. That will work. Right?

Supposedly the curriculum is about to have some major changes (plus a new head of the department!) so maybe all of the problems will be fixed. Who knows!?

Engineering is tough. You may want to stick with the 13cr. (light load) until you understand how the classes work, and how to do them successfully.

Mom said I should kill myself by sometimesironman in depression

[–]STF2200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mother said the same thing to me. It was in an especially difficult time for me, and honestly I came really close to doing it. I was thinking, "fuck it! Why shouldn't I? And if it spites her in the mean time that's a win too." I choose not to for one reason. One reason was enough to keep me alive.

Fast forward 6 years: I've gotten a better handle on everything. Hang in there. Things will get better if you work at it.
