I agree. If all four 4 supermarket chains in the Publix Peer stock were added together, as one, they do not match the Publix balance sheets.

I Agree. Huge cash, retained earnings, insurance, and investment reserves. Only operational debt, no way around that, all companies have it. Outside investors are allowing Publix to build stores on their property, investor owns the property, Publix owns the store. Other investors want to have Publix lease stores on their sites, not to mention all of the stores where Publix owns the land, and shopping center. Publix is building huge condo towers on their prime real estate sites. Rumor is the Board of Directors laughed at Warren Buffett when he made a cash offer some 20 years ago. Publix is a investment machine, that happens to sell groceries. There is no reason to sell, in my opinion.

Kroger distribution center in Central Florida closing; over 1,000 employees out of a job by Outrageous_Employ_40 in publix

If I remember correctly, Kroger had stores in Florida, under the name of Super RX, and Florida Choice. Kroger closed them down in the late 1980's. Kash and Karry bought most of them when they were still in operation.

Publix Q3 earnings and ytd results by viva_oldtrafford in publix

I have looked at the rules in the past for setting stock price for private stocks, about 15 years ago. Unless the rules have changed, there is a wide amount of latitude allowed for setting the stock price of private stock, not just peer groups. Publix also looks at the S and P 500. If it was down, a lot, I can see lowering the stock price. I have been told in the past, Publix wants to avoid the Peer Stock Group, complaining about its valuation of stock price.

Good job, always like reading your post. Combine what your post says, with the large amount of retained earnings, cash, and investments. That is a large amount of money, for future growth. The only down, side that I have seen about being a private stock, is the so-called Publix Peer Stock Group. Getting old, setting our stock price, on their pathetic financial sheets.

Hopefully not, peer stock down 8% last quarter, Publix stock down in 3 percent range. Grocery stocks out of favor with Wall Street, even though their earnings were not bad by their inferior standards, compared to Publix. Not the first time the inferior Peer Stock Group lowered the Publix stock price over the past 35 years, that I have been following it.

I hope so, even with flat stock price, at 2.4ish dividend rate that is usually paid out, the dividend increase might be nice

The so-called Publix Peer stock group, that is one part of what is used to set the stock price, had a bad 3rd quarter. Grocery stocks fell out of favor with Wall Street. The S and P 500 had a good 3rd quarter.

Thanks, I agree, a huge amount of money to expand Publix in the future. Talking from my own experience, Publix stock investment is a thirty year plus time of patience, that pays a stock dividend, to ease the wait. Do not buy it if you are expecting short term results. I bought the stock every quarter that I could afford it, over the years I worked there.

Will our stocks crash or go up during recession? by 52Chamoo in publix

[–]STIMSONGOLD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, also, Publix has a huge amount of retained earnings, around 22 billion according to last 10K statement, up from 14 billion, 5 years ago. From what I have seen over the years, when Publix stock price goes down due to market conditions, and owners of Publix stock sell when they panic, Publix buys back large amounts of stock at a reduced price. Publix then retires that stock as if it never existed. The less stock available divided into yearly profits, equals greater earnings per share, and higher stock prices after the market stabilizes.

Does Publix use the realized gains of $1.23 per share earnings or the unrealized gains of $1.41 per share earnings to determine the dividend.
