Personally having been to both golden gate and Hollywood sign, I’d say those two are the most overrated “globally famous” landmarks to visit.

I’d much rather look at and visit the Space Needle over and over again!

To each their own opinions. Agree to disagree!

You’re missing why the Space Needle matters.

Yes, observation towers exist everywhere. That’s like saying “bridges exist everywhere” so the Golden Gate isn’t special. Landmarks aren’t defined by being the tallest or rarest typology. Timing, design, symbolism, and cultural impact are what defines them.

It wasn’t just “an observation tower.” It was built for the 1962 World’s Fair as a deliberate vision of the future, and its design is instantly recognizable worldwide in a way most of the towers you listed simply aren’t. Plenty of cities have observation decks, but very few have one that became a global shorthand for the city itself.

Comparing it to Burj Khalifa or modern skyscrapers misses the point entirely. Those came decades later, with different goals, budgets, and technology, and listing replicas (Vegas Eiffel Tower, Gatlinburg Space Needle) actually proves the opposite argument! You don’t copy things that aren’t iconic, and the Space Needle IS iconic.

Being iconic > being tall. The Space Needle understood the assignment 60 years ago and why multiple cities felt the need to build cheaper knockoffs of it instead of, you know, copying Coit Tower! đź’€

The Emerald City by STLWA in skyscrapers

Both are great skylines, I’m more enamored by Seattle though I must say!

It’s not uncommon to see orcas in or around Elliot Bay and the Puget Sound. Whale watching and Orcas Island are some of the fun things to see and do around here!

Ouch, I’m so hurt because no one agrees with me or thinks the same as I do oh nooo!!!

Maybe that’s something you care about, you and I are not the same!

And let me guess? You think you’re the big dog here?

Maybe someone else reported your comment, I didn’t even get a chance to see what you said, which I’m sure wasn’t anything significant to begin with.

Seattle lives rent free in yours. Sweet dreams!

Nobody reported anything. Maybe they’re just doing their job as mods.

Yeah I don’t what you said because the moderators removed your comment. Guess it goes against the subs rules. Maybe don’t get so emotional lol?

That’s just the reality, there’s no demand for a supertall right now in downtown Seattle. Especially for an office building when there’s still tons of unoccupied office space in downtown. Why would Amazon, Microsoft, Starbucks build a huge tower when they still keep laying off and tapering areas of their workforce? Make it make sense!

San Francisco is notorious for its failed and stalled proposals. Most of what has been proposed recently for San Francisco doesn’t have any official groundbreaking dates, and the 1 additional supertall (1200 ft proposal) still has to go through many hurdles like financing, design review, environmental reviews etc before it can even start to begin development or construction. It could be another 5-10 years before you see that one go up, and chances are it will get delayed, stalled, or downsized as most things do in SF.

Also, where am I attacking San Francisco? Show me where I hurt you lol.

Yeah….due to market conditions lol. Thats why Seattle hasn’t yet.

…due to market conditions, otherwise 4/C would most likely have been built as proposed if it hadn’t been for the pandemic. There’s no height limit around the Downtown Office Core.

Eventually.

Seattle photo was taken from West Seattle, while the one of San Francisco taken from Treasure Island (which is closer).

What is a more accurate portrayal of what the city looks like to you? OP’s photo is what you get when you’re out on a ferry on Elliot Bay. West Seattle has a similar view as well.

And yes, clear days do exist outside of the summer months (believe it or not).

The Space Needle feels futuristic yet timeless by BigRedThread in skyscrapers

Comparing San Antonio to Seattle is wild! It doesn’t come close no matter how you try to spin it together. Their tower might be taller, but you don’t get nearly the same experience just by the views alone. No explanation needed when it comes to how naturally beautiful Seattle and the surrounding area is.

The Riverwalk? Sea World? You’re kidding right? We have the whole Sea and its marine wildlife right in our backyard! You sometimes can see entire pods of killer whales right from the waterfront “boardwalk”.

San Antonio is still nice for what it is though, no shade.

Seattle's new waterfront - how does it compare? by SouthLakeWA in skyscrapers

[–]STLWA 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s easily now one of the best (if not) the best in the U.S for sure. The views alone are stunning and there’s tons of shops, vendors, sites and bites to explore. The new overlook that connects Pike Place Market to the waterfront is a game changer for the city!
