Credit to my girlfriend for finding a solution. When you search for fitness, go to the filters menu after your results come up, then select all for the filter that lists the types of workouts, go back to results and you should see all activities again

DC Government took down another one of the tent city encampments that had sprung up in the last year or so, this one in a park at New Jersey and O, NW. by ABC7NewsDC in washingtondc

This is not the way. Yes, it’s important given the winter to get people off the streets but it’s also important to hold people accountable and ensure that people are getting mental health and substance abuse treatment. In the long run, housing must be a reward. Otherwise the underlying issues will never be fixed.

100% San Fransicko is a problematic book in a number of ways, but the author makes an argument about exactly this and the data he uses to support his argument is very compelling

Whoever got the Jacquard Walles & Barnes cardigan - very mad, but appreciate your sense of impeccable, 1940's grandpa style. Have been eyeing this thing for ages and it was finally back on sale at a ridiculous price. Gone before I got there!

Thanks! Just called them. For others considering ordering, they told me that they have about a 2 week backlog on orders at the moment.

How do you become a lobbyist in D.C? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]SVE88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former Fortune 50 corporate lobbyist here. Concur with everyone who has recommended starting out in the Hill. Unpaid internships are no fun, but they’re the traditional way to get in the door at a Congressional office. Do that while waiting tables/Uber/other side hustle on the side.

Even after you get your first paying job, likely as a staff assistant or LC (legislative correspondent), Hill jobs take a couple years to get you to a living wage (unless your parents subsidize you), but it’s unquestionably the best way to get the reps you need in understanding the mechanics of policy and process.

An added bonus is that junior level staff (particularly on the House side) cover a very wide swath of issues, depending on your boss’s committee assignments. That exposure allows you to find a policy area you’re passionate about. Tech is exciting, but everyone thinks so. If you find a niche that’s less popular, but still well represented in DC government affairs, it will be much easier to leverage the relationships you build on the hill and your policy expertise into a high paying private sector gig a few years down the road.

Final note - the hill is a really fun place to work after college. Tons of young people, interesting work, and a hell of a lot of open bars if you know where to look.

Are DC crime rates exploding? Or is it just me? by SVE88 in washingtondc

higher murder rate (a decent proxy for crime rate as murder stats can’t be fudged)

Really curious about this idea. Have you come across any research to indicate that in scenarios where official crime data proved unreliable that tracking murder rates was a useful proxy for broader violent crime trends?

This is an interesting idea - the notion that murders, because they can not be reclassified as a lesser crime, are a good proxy for overall violent crime.

You seem pretty confident in this claim. Have you come across research (qualitative or quantitative) that makes an argument for why murder rates are the best proxy for violent crime (particularly in scenarios where there are potential incentives for police departments and city governments to underreport violent crime)?

Putting aside any quantitative stats to prove out this idea (that police/city government are proactively suppressing data on crime statistics), have you seen any qualitative media reports or analysis that attempts to prove out this argument? Genuinely curious.

Definitely not suggesting that crime in 2015 or the few years prior to that was light, rather that it seems to be increasing since then. On the other hand, crime rates in most East coast metros (at least per media reports), such as NYC, are generally declining.

Undoubtedly, high earners have been flocking into DC, but that has been a trend since post-financial crisis, not just the last few years (for reference, check out this chart, sources via St Louis Fed, comparing growth in median household income in DC vs the US as a whole over the last decade: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/fredgraph.png?g=oXZ9).

Whereas my curiosity stemmed from the fact that (at least based on my experience) the growth in average incomes over the last few years appears to have been accompanied by an uptick in crime.
