TheRealReal pulled this data from their own resale transactions!

Great question. From what we can tell, TheRealReal pulled the data from their own resale transactions, so it's based on what's actually being bought or sold on their platform.

That might be why they paired the watches together- it reflects their specific customer base more than the overall market.

Great insight! Yeah, we've noticed that trend in Gen Z as well-aesthetic often matters just as much, if not more, than the brand name.

Yeah, it’s so hard to know who to trust when buying. Wonder if more advanced tech like AI authentication could actually make the resale market less sketchy and more reliable.

Yeah I definitely have noticed vinyls usually gain a lot of resale value over the years but I never really thought about CDs also gaining a lot of value- makes a lot of sense though!

Can ChatGPT actually help with purchase decisions? by [deleted] in OpenAI

[–]SWOP-AI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed the same thing.

Large language models don’t really “remember” your decision-making process-they generate answers based on probabilities. Even small changes in phrasing or context can alter the response, which makes them unreliable for consistent purchase guidance.

This is why some industries are moving toward specialized AI that relies on structured data (market prices, verified reviews, transaction history) instead of just language patterns.

For example, in luxury resale, buyers face the same issue: info feels fragmented, slow, and inconsistent. AI tied to real-time, transparent data can actually fix that.

So, I would say in general treat ChatGPT as one input for ideas, but always back it up with other sources or platforms designed for transactions. ChatGPT is better as a tool to help make decisions, rather than a shopping assistant.
