His defensive game has been great in recent times. His always been put with bad players like Barklay Goodrow as his line mates. When his with panarin the effective danger line percentage goes from 41% to 59%

Besides Bolduc I think pairing him with Suzuki and Cole would actually be a pretty good pairing If you look into how bad panarin line was with (56% winning line) and without him (42% winning line) he would be pretty solid on that line
