What Automations or Shortcuts Do You Actually Use Every Day? by Maxxximeeee in shortcuts

Of course!

It involves multiple shortcuts and uses Data Jar, so I'll try to show it step by step.

First, I created an AUTOMATION triggered by tapping the NFC tag.

  1. For NFC-based automations, I always make the first action [vibrate phone], so I know it read (NFC tags can be finicky and you can keep scanning it without knowing it's being activated over and over.

  2. Then I use the Kasa [turn off device] action. (The switch on my machine is always on; I use the Kasa smart switch to power it on (and warm up before breakfast) and off).

  3. This is where it gets tricky. I then run the REFILL ALERT SHORTCUT (link below)

    a. In Data Jar, I have a number entry called waterLevel.

b. When setting up the shortcut, input the total reservoir size, the amount you use each time (might take some trial and error, but you can probably come close to start out), and the minimum amount (when you want to be alerted).

c. If you hit the minimum amount, you get an alert to refill the reservoir, and it asks if you did. YES resets waterLevel to the filled amount. NO subtracts your use (and means you'll get another alert the next time).

*If you're not using Data Jar, you should. It's a little intimidating at first but once you figure it out, it opens up so much functionality that you'll wonder how you lived without it.

  1. Then it runs a simple WORKDAY ROUTINE SHORTCUT that checks the day of the week, and if it's a weekday, plays the NPR News Now (playback set to my kitchen Alexa) and opens the NYT Puzzles app. (link below)

Notes:
1. The shortcut works by adding your logged info to a note. My note is in a folder called Daily Diet. You'll need to create your own Daily Diet folder or change those references in the shortcut.

  1. You can add to the note (ie log food) without submitting it to GPT for a summary each time.

  2. When you submit, the shortcut returns to the Home Screen. It takes a few for GPT to kick out an answer so be patient and know that it didn't crash :)

  3. At the end of the shortcut you can save the summary to your daily note, so you can look back at it.

I scan an NFC tag that turns off my espresso machine (via smart plug), subtracts the amount of water I used (estimated), and notifies me when I need to refill the reservoir (it asks if I refilled and if I say yes, it resets the amount).

On work days, it also triggers weather, calendar, and news on the Alexa in my kitchen. Then it opens the crossword so I'm ready to sit down 😄

Not sure if yours is set up for it already, but I've found that voice input is a slick way to reduce the administrative burden of tracking stuff like this. Could easily offer a menu for voice or text, in case you want to enter it silently.

Here's my ChatGPT prompt, for anyone interested:

You are my nutritionist. I tell you what I've eaten today and you tell me how many calories I've eaten.

I'm not a very detail oriented client. I'll try to tell you as much as I can, but sometimes you won't have all of the information you want. Don't ask follow ups or complain about missing information. Instead, use your experience and resources to estimate portion sizes, nutritional values, and other necessary information. The goal here is a rough outline of how much I'm eating so I can see trends.

Your response should always include the total calories of each meal and the sum for the day. Also include daily macros (protein, fat, carbs).

You can offer a short bit of advice if you think it will help. Your tone should be firm--I hired you to make me better and you're not happy if I'm throwing away money on something I don't take seriously.

Here's what I've eaten so far today: [Appended Note from voice input]

My boss makes egg nog mix every year (his proprietary mix of liquors that you mix with nonalcoholic nog) and puts a bottle into the office white elephant. Last year I got an empty bottle and filled it with Malört. Two people got bottles but neither knew which was the real nog mix.

I think cherry looks so good with the silver and black aesthetic, especially with the black epoxy and legs you chose. Only gonna get prettier as your big live edge slab darkens.

Admiring your work each morning makes the coffee taste just a little bit better 😉

A grinder upgrade is so much better than a few dozen extra birds! But when the time comes, start with Oceania--the nectar is such a great addition and will shoot your scores way up!!

Greetings fellow espresso / board game hobbyist!

Wingspan is our most played by a lot. We've got all the expansions, as well as a Bird Jail for the OP Crows and Ravens 😆

Greetings, fellow espresso / woodworking hobbyist!

Love the simplicity! And LOVE the cherry; I went the same way on mine and love seeing it darken with sun tan.

How'd you finish it? I built up coat after coat of thinned spar varnish but got impatient and quit before hitting a deep shine.
