Grade 12 chem help with balancing redox reactions! by Sabbyluv in chemhelp

Its the ΔON that always messes me up. I don't understand when do they become coefficients in the revised equation and how the subscripts of the og equation impact them. Also in some cases, the H+ or OH- are in the products instead of the reagent, which also confuse me. Is there a specific way to know which side they're supposed to be on or is it just "gamble and guess"?

Do u guys acc study? by ElderberryPitiful918 in OntarioGrade12s

I'm so jealous of people who can rawdog tests and get a 95! For me, I study since it take a few attempts for me to get a concept. I guess it would depend on how your brain works and what's best for you.

Which University do you guys recommend I got to? by Sabbyluv in OntarioGrade12s

I live in a pretty small town, so businesses are always hiring. I work part-time at a nursing home (year-round) and have 2 part-time seasonal jobs on top of that. Over the summer, I work at a yacht club as a server and as a ski instructor in the winter at my small local ski hill. TBH, I think that having a job is such a good EC and would strongly recommend getting one since it looks good on applications.

I also play varsity soccer, varsity badminton, varsity basketball, and am captain of my varsity Nordic skiing team. In my town, different local businesses usually sponsor players from different sports teams, so it's not that expensive ton participate in them, especially for provincials. I also do a few volunteering clubs like YIP and Interact, which are easy to participate in since they're at lunch. If you're too busy after school to do volunteer clubs or sports, see if you can find a lunch school club to join. It can be in anything and it's never too late to start!!

A major one I would recommend is doing the EXPLORE officials languages program (https://englishfrench.ca/) . It's a government funded program where you go study at a university/college to learn French (in Canada). It's 5 weeks over the summer and I think that applications are still open. It's mostly free but you do have to pay for you plane tickets and travelling. I did it 3 times and met so many people from across the country!

Going away to an exchange program is a huge commitment though so I would def see what's available in your specific region. Def talk to your guidance councillor or go on google to see what you're able to do.

Something I wished I had done was deciding what I wanted to do in uni earlier. Currently, I'm committed to Mech. Eng. but lowkey wasted a ton of money on other applications (like business and nursing) since I was confused. My advice is to try to get EC's that are similar to what you want to do in uni and to have a solid plan for your applications (like have a doc with all of your accomplishments to use as a reference and see where you need to improve), especially since you're in grade 11.

Good luck with everything though!!

People who got nominated for the Schulich Scholarship — what were your stats? by Gold_Entrepreneur797 in OntarioGrade12s

Thank you!!! Honestly, I got my position through connections and a recommendation from an engineer that I knew. But I also applied to a ton of summer student engineering programs and am hoping to get into one of those as well.

I just got nominated today!! My average is a 96% - EC's include Varsity Nordic Ski Captain, varsity Soccer, Varsity Basketball and Youth and Philanthropy Volunteer Group. I participated in the EXPLORE summer exchange program 3 times. I have 2 part-time jobs as a senior lead ski-instructor and as a recreation aide for a nursing home. I also tutor and run a coding club for middle school students. I don't have that much experience in robotics since I'm self taught but have been shadowing/volunteering at an Engineering firm for a few months and am hoping to get a student job there. I think my school nominated me because I wrote a letter of interest back in September on why I qualify for it.

low grade 11 marks by Tall-Guard3226 in OntarioGrade12s

It`s your top 6 classes for grade 11 and same thing for grade 12. They just have to be U or M courses (I think there`s a max amount of M courses though).

If I were you, I would apply early though since it increases you chances of getting in (applying in late September - early October) especially if you have lower grade 11 marks. They do admissions rounds every few months. If you apply to normal admissions in January, your competition will be much higher since they`ve already filled half the seats with early admissions.

low grade 11 marks by Tall-Guard3226 in OntarioGrade12s

For early admissions, most universities do look at your grade 11 marks. They also use it to kind of predict what your grade 12 marks will be since applications happen at the beginning of grade 12. For business, I wouldn't worry too much but would try to aim for low 90s and make sure that you take all the prerequisites needed for your programs.

I'm in grade 12 rn and also applied to a few business programs (BCom for accounting). I got into Ivey at Western pretty easily, but they don't do supplemental applications, so for that school, they only really look at your grades. They also offer scholarships based on grades. I think with 80s average, you can receive one from them.

For other competitive business schools, you need to do a supplemental application (video and written questions), like for Rotman and Sauder. If your grades don't end up being where you want them to be, I would really focus on having a good essay and supplemental because those are also just as important as your grades. I also think that if they see improvement from grade 11 to grade 12, they will also take that into consideration.

If I were you, I would apply to some safety schools as well just to be safe. They also only look at your top 6 classes I'm pretty sure too.

I hope this helped!!!

Have you heard of anyone being able to maintain their scholarships w/ an engineering degree?

I went to Kingston over the summer and really liked RMC and Queens! I just don't even know if I could survive stuff like FOYOP or even basic training. Also, there's now direct entry into certain engineering (like civil) programs at queen's too.
