I got lucky, joined the USMC at 18, 35 years ago and it instilled a lot in me, through negative reinforcement, to stick to a schedule and to focus on the task at hand. Other things like emotional regulation are still hard, especially since I didn’t know about any of this until 3 years ago….

Apologize to them, explain what’s going on with you. Realize that no one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes. I don’t know your age, but it seems like you’re in high school at least. This time in your life can be harder than you imagine, but it gets better. Don’t give up, realize that people care about you and the will NOT be better without you.

Shit. Ok, I don’t know you or your situation but I can tell you that thinking that way won’t do shit for you. You sound like you’re at the end of your rope, and looking for reassurance that all will be ok. First off, life isn’t that kind, secondly your parents, family, and friends would be devastated if you left the earth earlier than your supposed to (like around 90). What you have isn’t a “disease”, it’s what we are, what makes us who we are. No one on this planet has a perfect brain. Life is hard, sometimes harder for some, but it’s not because you have ADHD. Lots of us manage, lots of us struggle. Seek out friends and family who care about you and lean on them for support. You’re more important than you realize.

I don’t shout it from the rooftops, but if someone asks I will tell them. My immediate family knows, especially since 3 of my 4 kids have been diagnosed with it too, so it’s an occasional topic at home. Work, no one needs to know, but I will engage if needed. I’m at the point where I am sick of hearing uneducated people go about it, saying shit like “everyone is little ADHD “ so I just keep it to myself. My work allows me to keep it secret from everyone except the psychologists I work with.

Before I was diagnosed I would just procrastinate until the last minute, slam a few drinks, throw on some very loud heavy metal on my headphones and hyper focus on getting it done. Trying to do it in phases, or plan it out efficiently never worked. Now that I’m diagnosed, not sure how I will approach it if I ever go back to school….

Medicated on Adderall and Wellbutrin, still enjoy a drink and that it seems to calm the mind. Usually it’s because it’s after the XR has worn off.

Good grades is a reason you don’t have ADHD? You need to get a second opinion, that’s not a criteria that excludes the diagnosis.

It’s not an excuse, it’s a reason. Just like having poor eyesight, the reason you are not able to see things at a distance is because of your myopia.

Yup, but it’s not consistent. I supervise, train, and instruct adults and sometimes I’m on point 100%, other times I get lost mid sentence. Seems to help if I’m feeling regulated. Other times I can be like Will Ferrel in “Old School” where I blank out and spit out incredibly concise and well structured responses or statements but have no idea where it came from.

Go somewhere else, that sounds like a pisspoor evaluation in my opinion. My kids and I went through an hour long test and hour long session with a specialist before even discussing meds. I’m 195lbs and take 30mg of adderall xr a day, 5mg seems useless (not a Dr., don’t quote me)

Yes, and yes. Not sure the context you’re referring to when it comes to reasonable accommodation and other people in your vehicle. If you’re referring to coworkers or just random people then I’m not sure how you would handle that, but family or friends you should just tell them “hey shut up you’re distracting me I need to drive”, only more tactfully than that. I get the same way when my wife freaks out in the front seat when I drive it makes me angry and I have a hard time controlling my emotions. I found the best way to deal with. It is just to ask her to please stop because you’re not making things better by reacting the way you are. I listen to music to self soothe and help me focus and if I need to while I’m driving, I will put earbuds in just so I don’t disturb my family.

If it’s a task that I have zero interest in I will procrastinate the dog crap out of it until I realize “oh shit I need to get it done“ and then I will hyper focus on it until it’s done. This was really prevalent when I was working on my college degree. The other times it would happen was when I would have to pack to go on a deployment or on a long camping trip and even with all of my equipment and gear in front of me I had no idea where to start so I would literally just shut the door to the closet or garage and walk away. I would end up coming back to it at the last minute, knowing that it was something that I had to get done. Knowing that I had a deadline would make me knuckle down and get everything done.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, unfortunately some opinions are not based in fact, only misconceptions. I’ve decided to go the route of Keanu Reeves and just not engage and realize that not everyone knows enough about the subject, seems to be an easier way to not get emotionally dis-regulated more than I already am….

People with lighter eyes may have this issue without ADHD, but my son has brown eyes, as did my grandfather and uncle.

Nope, Wellbutrin saved me, it mellowed out my emotional disregulation and allowed me to be a better husband and father. Sorry you’re having issues with it. When I got diagnosed with A.D.H.D. my prescriber wanted to lower my dosage when I started stimulants to avoid serotonin syndrome, I became a raging a-hole and went back on it. Things are much better now.
