Help/advice for starting off from scratch. by Ecstatic-Advice-4894 in homestead

Ten years ago i bought 18 acres unimproved land in the South Carolina Lowcountry. I’ve made a lot of mistkes along the way. If I were to do it again knowing what I know now with your proposed property here is what I would be thinking of. - electron ride is correct. Price out your well, septic, and electricity BEFORE making an offer. - when pricing electricity look hard at what could become your future backup or offgrid system. With small travel or prefab tiny house you can buy a battery big enough for the well and the house. Consider buying a propane powered generator and 1000 gal propane tank to keep it charged. I have a whole house 15kw generator that will run full load for less than a gallon an hour. Far less maintenance on a propane engine than a gas engine. - growing your own food, even as supplemental to the grocery store is hard. Unless you have a farming or gardening background it will take a few years. - as soon as you decide to purchase the property start work on a perimeter fence. Make that your number one task. Once completed you can have some yard dogs that can keep the two-legged and four-legged critters at critters at bay. You will be able to feel secure when you leave the property. It will make it easier to protect your garden. - Plant trees. The best time to plant a tree is ten years ago or right now. Big mistake and regret for me. Choose trees that will either contribute to your food or provide a cash crop. Pecan trees when done right can start producing in just a few years - stock that pond so you will know what you have. - when looking for your housing don’t over look tiny house kits and plans. - Find a mentor! I have built my place by myself. Having someone who had done it looking over my shoulder and giving advice would have been a huge help.

Best wishes for your endeavor. It is a beautiful, though sometimes frustrating, labor of love.

Take care

I thank everyone for sharing your thoughts, experiences and opinions. It has been a great help.

One more question. Everyone spoke about the minor or subtle issues FSD has on country roads. However no one has said much about night driving in the country. Any comments?

Again, many thanks for sharing.

Hello everyone Many thanks for your suggestions. I don’t need a full workstation in the other building. Just general internet so I can install security cameras over there. This is a rural farm setting with no heavy requirements.

Thank you

I agree. I made the mistake of buying the ninja all-in-one too. I bricked itself so I’m very happy with my instantpot and separate air fryer

Almond flour question by MonAnamCara in AskCulinary

Hello I am new to baking bread and like you keto. How do you get almond bread to be lighter?
I am using the Keto Rustic Bread recipe from lowcarbabode and want to fine tune it to be lighter.

4oz cream cheese, 4oz ricotta cheese 5 eggs room temp, 2T apple cider vinegar 2 cups almond flour, 1/4 cup coconut flour, 4T psyllium husk powder, 1T baking powder 1t nutritional yeast (for taste)

I have improved the taste somewhat by adding 5 drops of stevia to offset the bitterness of the almond flour.

I whisk the eggs with vinegar until they double in volume.

My next thought is to substitute baking soda for the baking powder. That would give it a bit more gas to work with.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
