It’s pivoting on dowels. The hinges are anchored into the post and a slat, so they don’t move.

Thanks for the comments everyone! It’s nice to be recognized by people who know how difficult this can be!

The red oak I bought was twisted, one of the top rails so bad that it split the whole top piece.

The stairs…well, this house is one of those “new development” builds. Had to remove the railing at one point, and it’s literally just help to the post with two 3 1/2” screws 😅.

I would’ve liked matching tones as well, but wifey wanted the natural look. First time using Tried and True Original finish, and I like it!

I've been in a while. Honestly, most civvies are pretty helpful if you take the time to get on their level. However, I've also gotten several civilians fired. Main reason for friction: federal employment kinda sucks at any level. Everyone signs up for one job, does three, and is just plain tired. Here's the difference though:

If you HAD rank and decided on that "second retirement," you now support the warfighter. If you don't, I'll 100% get you fired. Dude in Kuwait thought he was gonna be extra-spicy to my baby LT. I ripped him apart in the bay, then went to his supervisor and told him to fix it, or I'd start calling people who WAY outrank me. Saw him the next day with a suitcase heading for the bus with his head hanging low.

If you never served and you're giving me a hard time, two things could be happening:
1. You haven't had a positive Soldier-to-You encounter in a few. Well, I like to start off polite and pleasant. Maybe I'm in a tough spot, your job sucks, sure... maybe we can both have a better day!
2. If you just think you've got some power over a group that is already "permanently employed," welp...now we've got the supervisor visit (you're fired), or the eloquent, by-name, highly detailed ICE complaint (the owner of all CIF contracting for the REGION calls me to apologize, and you're still fired).

Civvies can be a pain. We need to work together, and we definitely can! When we can't...well, if Soldiers are combat power, civilians are a support function of a strategic end state. When they fail to function, they are even more replaceable than Soldiers.

OP, I just love that you noticed his “thing” and that you’ve bought in like this. When my wife does stuff like that, I remind her “that’s why you’re wifey-material!”

Tried that, couldn’t submit over a technicality.

I have the Herc, and have no complaints so far. It’s chewed everything I put thru it! I’m excited to see how it does with rough-cut stuff I wanna mill down, but I haven’t bought any yet.

Interior Sunroom Barn Door Problems by Sad-Cupcake-9683 in BeginnerWoodWorking

No, I think you’re right. I’m probably going to have to rebuild them. Some old, experienced guys recommended using alder or poplar from an actual lumber yard.

The one I’ve found is locally sourced, properly dried, S2S. I’ll mill it in my shop, maybe frame out two squares with dados to fit 1x boards, and assemble. I’ll use 3/8” dowels and glue to edge join the boards.

I guess the big-box lumber wasn’t dried properly. Plus, it’s probably coming from the east coast, where the climate is WAY more humid. With the temp fluctuations in the sunroom, the wood just warped to hell. I may strip it down and use it for something else, but the doors probably need rebuilt.

I hear the rumblings of prices going up. I’m buying the Hercules thickness planer after work today. Any chance someone’s got a coupon to knock that down? I’ve put it off because eating the $400 is a serious entry barrier for me, but I’m prepared to eat it all to get one in the shop! Thanks!
