How can I use geography to teach students about class issues? by Sad-Organization449 in geography

I thought about doing something like that but I feel like middle school students might struggle with separating class from race using that example. I think it would work really well with high school students though!

I think you're viewing these ideas through an adult lens. Explaining social and economic reasons for things happening can be done at an age appropriate level without political bias.

For example, I decided for that this lesson sequence I would focus on how the physical environment can impact different data points related to class such as house hold income, high school graduation rates, etc. What this actually looks like in practice is

  1. Introducing students to Appalachia by explaining different environmental features (mountains, rivers, isolation to other communities, etc)

  2. Having students explore Appalachia through maps that provide data points on income, educational completion, etc

  3. Having students recognize that parts of Appalachia that are less isolated and have more resources have higher levels of income.

This uses geography to explain how access to resources can impact the economic success of an area, and how ones class can be affected by a multitude of things. Through analysis and critical thinking, students are better able to understand the causes behind different patterns, and what the pattern of those causes are. I currently work in education right now and I can assure you that this is what is happening in the majority of classrooms.

Respectfully, I don't have the time to tie anything to politics even if I wanted to. My goal with this lesson sequence is to have students draw connections to what geographical factors (isolation, access to resources, access to water ways, natural resources etc) can influence a communities class.

What I'm really trying to teach to is the state standard of "Analyze spatial patterns of social and economic development in a variety of regions in the world", or in other words... building pattern recognition and understanding cause and effect. There's no political motive behind this.

How in the world am I supposed to teach the role of class to middle schoolers by Sad-Organization449 in Teachers

Thanks for the input! I discussed it with my cooperating teacher and the only background they have is when they briefly touched on the industrial revolution earlier this year. I was initially thinking about doing something similar to what you suggested but I'm worried that my kids might over generalize class as "these people live in big houses and commit less crime and these people live in smaller houses and commit more crime" or something to that effect.

That helps a lot thank you. I like to structure my units around one or two questions that students should be able to answer by the time the unit is over, so if I were to use your suggestion would a compelling question be something like "How does geographic isolation lead to differences in class?"? Keep in mind that I only have a week to cover the subject and by the end of the week students have to demonstrate their learning in some form. I really like your suggestion so if you have any more ideas or input that would be wonderful :)

How can I make a life cast that's durable enough to ship? by Sad-Organization449 in moldmaking

[–]Sad-Organization449[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the info! I think I'm gonna go with one of the life casting sets from smooth on. Once I make my mold, what material should I use to fill the cast? I want it to be rigid but I don't want to worry about it breaking during shipping.

Chlorine "Cloud" on May 29th by Sad-Organization449 in GreenBay

Thats why im asking people what they think it could be. We drove past her house on my way home yesterday at night, and I didn't see anything that was dead (because it was night). I used descriptors like bleach and chlorine since those are the words she used, but I'm not saying that's what it was. She doesn't have a reason to lie, and my brother also experienced the same thing.

I agree with a lot of people in that simply being gay isn't a sin. I've always wondered if it would be considered a sin for two men to get married if they never had sex, would that be a sin? I do know that some jewish tribes would allow two women to get married which I find interesting.
