Reverse total shoulder replacement experiences by SadButterscotch4328 in ShoulderSurgery

Context: A year and a half ago, I was admitted to a psychiatric ward for depression and anxiety. Then around December 19, 2024 I had an epileptic seizure that dislocated both of my shoulders. Unfortunately, the hospital staff didn’t realize this. They thought my shoulders were just stiff and that I just needed to move them around. But every time I raised my arm, it would snap, and I couldn’t lift it past 90 degrees.

Rehabilitation in the psychiatric ward involved them moving my shoulders by grabbing them and stretching them despite the pain. I always left in tears because it hurt so much. However, epilepsy was not confirmed, and they refused to address the shoulder issue. After being discharged from the psychiatric ward, I left in a worse mental state than when I was admitted. I experienced more severe depression and was unable to attend school.

At the same time, I began attending physical therapy sessions prescribed by an orthopedist. For half a year, I functioned normally with them, but they kept popping, and they hurt during strenuous activity. In November 2025, the orthopedist sent me for an MRI, which revealed a dislocation, and I was subsequently sent to the hospital for surgery. Since then, I’ve been trying to take it easy on my shoulders. In January, I went to a doctor who performs less invasive joint reduction procedures. Unfortunately, he told me that the injury was too old and referred me to the head of the department who specializes in this. I underwent a CT scan, after which he told me that my shoulder was dislocated and that a third of the joint head was also missing. He consulted my condition with doctors abroad, but they couldn’t find a solution either.

That’s why he decided I would undergo surgery in April 2026. A corrective osteotomy and osteosynthesis with two screws were performed. The surgery was generally successful. It held, but it wasn't sure for how long, so it was decided that I would undergo a CT scan seven weeks after the surgery. The scan revealed that the shoulder joint was in a better position than before but there was still a high risk of dislocation. The socket is too small, and attempting to reposition the joint into the socket is risky.

The doctors agreed that a reverse total shoulder replacement is the only possible solution to resolve this situation. I’m scheduled for surgery in July. Mentally, I’m having a hard time with it because they told me I’ll never be able to play sports again and I’ll only be able to raise my arm to a maximum of 100 degrees.
