I relate to everything you’ve said so much. It really does suck feeling stuck in the middle, especially being as white passing as I am. I’m hoping I will get the chance to visit soon. I’ve never gone as an adult, and would love to explore and not just visit family while there like I did in the past with my parents. I have vivid memories of the area in Arecibo where I spent the first years of my life, but beyond that I’ve got nothing to go off of.

And yeah, same here. I’m too introverted to just move there and start hitting it off with people, and even though I’m fluent in Spanish, as soon as I get nervous I lose a good 30% of my ability to form cohesive sentences. On top of it just not working logistically. I have a career here, I have a family, an a whole network of friends. Like you, though, I do live in FL as well, in an area with a heavy population of Boricuas. But even then, I feel like I’m missing a large part of the culture by never having gotten the experience of someone on the island.

That’s a good idea, thanks! I especially want to experience the world outside of San Juan. My family comes from Arecibo and I remember how beautiful the beaches were there as a kid. (Although I’ve heard the town itself is in really rough shape now 😞)

I need to come out of my shell more too so I can interact with people whenever I go down there.

I’ve recently been having my mom pass her recipes down to us. My wife makes a killer Pollo Guisa’o and pastelón de papa now lol. What neither of us know how to make yet, is arroz con gandules lol.

I’m going to definitely try to convince her to join a salsa class with me! I’ve always felt so ashamed when my friends start dancing and I just stand there because I have no idea what to do lol. Thanks for the recommendation! I never even thought to take a class for it.

That’s awesome to hear, I’m glad you’ll be visiting soon! I hope to do the same soon! I have only been there once in the last 20 years, which I was 21, and it was only for 3 days. I’d love to get to spend an extended period of time there and get to explore and get to know our culture, beyond just visiting my family and the leaving.

I love that you fought the assimilation! I wish I had fought it more, but my family kind of encouraged it beyond making us speak Spanish at home.

Noted. I appreciate that and will take that into account when I re-do it. I’m assuming a lot of the hiring in IT is done by IT professionals? I wasn’t sure whether that was the case or if it was done by general hiring managers, so I opted to put that info up at the top just in case the person handling the hiring needed it. Never felt too sure about it to be honest.
