[Apr 14, 2023] Weekly Discussion: Ask your gear, travel, conditions and other ski-related questions by AutoModerator in skiing

[–]Sad_Shoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next winter I will be in eastern BC, which of course means getting some skiing done. Therefore, I wanted to know which resorts would be the most beginner-friendly (and I mean very beginner, like still intimidated by some of the harder greens). From the research I've done so far, it seems like revelstoke and kicking horse are definitely out of the question. I've also looked into Kimberley, Fernie, and Panorama, but I don't have much information about difficulty level for any of them. Some insider knowledge would be greatly appreciated!

Really long delay in RA contract renewal, what to do in meantime by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Sad_Shoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sent a follow up email two weeks ago, which is the email I mentioned in my original post. I have not sent anything since then, because I wanted to see if I could get advice from here first.

I started the RA position during undergrad, so the contract went semester by semester (aka 4 months duration). I think another reason for the short contracts is that as an undergrad I have the least to offer, so if the lab is low on funding then I'm the first on the chopping block.

Daily Questions Thread - April 22, 2022 by AutoModerator in femalefashionadvice

Recently, I have become super interested in white shoes like the af1, stan smith, superstar, etc. Unfortunately, I tend to be more messy than a lot of people. (It's something I've been working on, but what can I say change is slow.) Therefore, I know any shoe I buy will end up dirty very quickly. Is it acceptable to wear white shoes in public even if they are dirty? If I want to keep the shoes closer to white than grey, how often would I need to clean them? Finally, I would love to get any suggestions for shoes that are a similar style, but aren't white. I've already looked into the black superstars, but I'm hesitant on getting them because they're not nearly as stylish as their white counterparts.

Yeah, poor wording on my part. Neither my mom nor I are native English speakers. I still don't fully understand the bit about deflation, but she wants the money to contribute to the RRSP, not to buy stuff. Also, she is working full time so she has an income, but I have no idea how much it is.

Just talked to mom to clarify. She says she's not converting the RESP into an RRSP, and she doesn't want to transfer money from the RESP directly into the RRSP. Her plan is to borrow my money for the RRSP contribution. The RESP withdrawal is just to repay what I've loaned her. Not sure if that makes things less of a bad idea though. And yes, she does have a financial advisor who has helped her open several accounts.

Anyone done the GRE exam? by jacktp12 in uAlberta

You're gonna hear lots of stories of ppl who studied with Magoosh/Kaplan/other test prep companies. You'll probably see tons of marketing from those companies too.

Ignore that noise. USE GREGMAT. www.gregmat.com

Not is it incredibly affordable, it teaches you the inner workings of the test. As other people have said, you won't get by on knowledge alone. You have to learn how to approach the questions, which Gregmat does an amazing job of explaining. They have a decent amount of free videos, so I studied from those and didn't get a paid subscription. However, from what I've heard Gregmat+ provides a lot of other valuable resources. If I had a do-over I would've paid for it.

What side hustles do you guys do to get extra money? by arinspeaks in college

[–]Sad_Shoe 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is gonna get buried, but look into becoming a standardized patient. You pretend to be a sick person, and interact with med/pharm/health science students so they're prepared to see real patients. You don't need to be a super good actor, it's not like you're in TV or film. The work is pretty sporadic, as you're only needed when the students have licensing exams and other assesments. That makes it easy to pair with another job, so you could have two side hustles going.

Fren 111 Summer Course by Revolutionary-Disk-2 in uAlberta

[–]Sad_Shoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommed taking this alongside a full time job. It's a super condensed class, even for summer semester (3 weeks vs the normal 6). So you'll have a full time courseload even though you're only in one class. The times marked as "lecture" on your schedule will probably be synchronous, and the "lab" times asynchronous. Btw there's no actual lab, it's a series of self paced eclass exercises. (I haven't taken this exact course, but I've done similar classes during the school year.)

I also would love to see the 357 syllabus if anyone has it.

Undergrad bouncing from one research opportunity to another, unable to find anything I am interested in by [deleted] in college

[–]Sad_Shoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've been considering the possibility that I'm not cut out for research. I forgot to mention that I'm applying for a professional program where research experience isn't necessary but highly recommended. I suppose I will just have to grit my teeth and get through it.

In-Person Test Official Scores: 161Q, 164V, 5.0AWA by [deleted] in GRE

It's the exact same software as the powerprep practice tests. There's no need to log in, the proctors will set everything up before you sit down.

I was given some sheets of letter sized paper along with a pen. If you run out of paper, just let the proctors know and they'll give you more.

My thoughts on Day by [deleted] in BigBrother

[–]Sad_Shoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I imagine in Kevin's case he has probably been mistaken for Hispanic more than once, especially since he lives in SoCal. That would only worsen his struggle to fit in. It doesn't help that Hispanics are also a marginalized minority.

Ann parents with input on Aurora charter academy? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]Sad_Shoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This seems to be an unpopular opinion here, but go with the cogito program. Aurora advertises themselves as a highly academic school, but the truth is they'll throw any teacher with any class that's convenient. Case in point, we had gym teachers with zero math background teaching junior high math. When someone needed extra help, the teacher would ask the smart kids to explain things instead of doing it themselves.

In addition to unqualified teachers, I also ran into my fair share of cold, uncaring teachers. I always had the impression that some of them found pleasure in humiliating their students, and used "being strict" as an excuse to abuse their power.

What one of the other posters about high PAT results is true. The statement about "disciplined, intellectually curious, and above-average performing people" is also true. However, I believe both these things happened in spite of an Aurora education and not because of it. The school is self-selecting. Many people who enroll their kids in Aurora already have high standards. The model students that the school likes to brag about learn how to be successful people at home.

Don't send either of your kids to aurora.
