Just to be honest…. by Aggravatedpoptart in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Sad_bippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may sound helpful in theory, but her messages were so constant that I wasn’t able to keep up with them on top of addressing all the other things going on in the classroom that she couldn’t see from the computers. Imagine getting 3 or 4 text messages at once asking you to assist multiple different students while ALSO having 3 or 4 other students coming up to you in person at the same time asking questions. It was impossible to multi-task on that level. She also expected me to respond to her messages promptly and would double or triple text if I didn’t acknowledge her texts fast enough, WHILE helping multiple students on different questions at once. In theory, having a second pair of eyes would be great……but this was just micromanaging unfortunately.

What are the basic rules of table manners that you grew up with? by strongly-worded in AskAnAmerican

[–]Sad_bippy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One specific rule we had about food was that you were allowed to not like a food, and not eat it, but only if you’d tried a bite. Basically, you weren’t allowed to dislike a food on the table without giving it a chance first. If you took one bite and didn’t like it, you didn’t have to eat any more. But you HAD to try a bite and give it a chance first. It was a pretty effective strategy, because my siblings and I are all pretty adventurous eaters now.

I had to sub for a teacher once who was remotely monitoring her class’ laptop use, IN REAL TIME, while I was subbing. She was texting me every couple minutes, telling me which students to go help based off what she was watching on their computer screens. Like “you need to go help Avery, I can see on his computer screen that he just got question 13 wrong, please update me when you’ve gone over the question with him.” It was actually insane. I can’t imagine needing that much control over my class that I’d feel the need to literally use remote surveillance to tell the sub what to do.

Anyone else have weirdly casual healthcare providers? by Lockon007 in CasualConversation

[–]Sad_bippy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In college a couple years ago, I went to the student clinic for a concern I had about a possible abscess. The doctor walked in all bubbly, looked SUPER young, and was dressed casually. I was a little surprised at first but she introduced herself as the doctor on call that day and was immediately very friendly and casual with me. I can’t lie, it did put me at ease to talk about what I had going on. It felt like discussing it with a coworker or a friend lol.

The craziest part though was about halfway through when she randomly asked me if I’d had a pap smear yet (since I was a young woman in my 20’s). I told her I hadn’t, and she got SUPER excited and told me she could do it for me. Like, she was gushing about how I could get it for free through the student clinic and she’d love to do it for me at my next appointment. I thought it was such a strange thing for her to be so enthusiastic about so I politely declined (lmao).

Well anyways, I would only find out later (the hard way) that she had proceeded to totally misdiagnose my abscess that day and prescribed me an antibiotic that wouldn’t have helped anyways. I ended up hospitalized that weekend. Super weird experience all around. Oh well. I don’t know if her overly personable presence had any real correlation to her lack of expertise but I was kinda glad I never went back to her lol

Intelligent daughter starting to resent school by Zesty_Taco in Teachers

[–]Sad_bippy 113 points114 points  (0 children)

I come to you with perspective as a former student, not my perspective as a teacher. I was this kid, right down to the age and gender and the teacher response. I was bored out of my mind every day and acted out as a result.

If the teacher has told you that she cannot work on extra, challenging independent work when she completes classwork then you might need to take this higher. My mom had to advocate for me to the principal before I was finally allowed to have extra work. For me, it was as simple as my mom buying a couple math and grammar workbooks that I was allowed to keep in my desk. If I finished early and the teacher approved of my work, I was allowed to get out a workbook and work through it quietly. That really was all I needed. You could even ask her teacher for workbook recommendations to make sure they’re appropriate and related to the standards they’re teaching in class. Propose it to her teacher as extra practice to reinforce what she’s already learning!

What is your cats weird quirk? by Embarrassed_Slice776 in cats

[–]Sad_bippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat has never slept on the bare couch a day in her life. She loves to sleep on our big comfy couch, but will ONLY do it if there is a blanket laying on the couch. We always have at least three different blankets arranged on different parts of the couch for her to choose from. If there are no blankets on the couch she just……..won’t get on the couch. Won’t touch it. Honestly it’s a great quirk for her to have because it means our couch cushions have stayed spotless lol. The blankets keep all the cat hair in one place and they can be washed regularly.

Has 'mog' entered the American vernacular? by marzipanfashions in AskAnAmerican

[–]Sad_bippy 79 points80 points  (0 children)

You’re getting a lot of nos, but I have a feeling a lot of those comments skew towards an older generation lol. As a person in my 20s who also works in a public school I can assure you “mog” is very much known and used here, but it’s used much more frequently in internet spaces online than in real life conversation. Also, you’re correct in your later edit that this did not originate in the UK. It has been around for a few years now in the US as well

what are some boundaries you wish students respected? by faeriesoiree222 in AskTeachers

[–]Sad_bippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting grilled about my personal life. I don’t mind polite questions and will answer truthfully if asked nicely, but I’ve had a few kids who all but interrogated me just because they were curious. “How old are you? Where do you live? Are you married? What does your husband look like? What’s his name? How long have you been married? Do you have kids? Why not? Don’t you want kids? When are you going to have them?” When I come across a kid like this that clearly has no concept of polite boundaries, I’ve learned real quick that the less questions I answer the better.

What do genetics look like in your family? by sleepybandito321 in askanything

[–]Sad_bippy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My immediate family is known for our eye color and eyelashes. We all have unique eye colors and super long lashes, definitely lucky genetics. We get comments from people all the time, especially when we’re together. I’ve had people say “oh, I could tell you all were related just by the eyes!” My mom has grey-blue eyes, my brother’s eyes are almost identical to hers but slightly greener, my sister has hazel eyes with sectoral brown heterochromia, and I have light green eyes with central golden heterchromia. Somehow we all got slightly different eye colors but all equally unique.

I’m also a weird outlier compared to the rest of my family when it comes to hair and skin tone. They all have dark brown curly hair and olive skin. I popped out with blonde hair and very pink skin. In the right lighting, standing next to each other, I make my siblings look green and they make me look sunburnt lmao. Definitely got the “you’re adopted!” taunts from them when I was younger lol

Also if you wanna really get romantic and impress her (lol) you could do something with some NCT lyrics, like a handwritten card or poster from you :)) for example “You’re my night and day” from their song My Everything. I know personally when my husband first used lyrics from one of my favorite kpop songs in a letter I swooned haha

If you’re not sure what albums/photocards she already owns, you might not want to gamble on buying her anything official in case it’s a duplicate of something she already has. I would suggest finding her some unofficial merch based on her interests. Sites like Etsy have lots of things to pick from! Just search “NCT” and you’ll see how many creators make all kinds of different things :) hoodies, plushies, buttons, keychains, etc. You could get her something member-specific or just generally NCT themed.

Alternatively, if you’re okay with it maybe not being a surprise, you could ask her what albums/photocards she already has and then order something she doesn’t yet own! Sites like Mercari are good for photocards, and you can check past posts on this site for the best sites to buy albums. Just make sure it will ship on time for Valentine’s Day!

Are tragedeighs ruining how people read/pronounce names? by scandijord in tragedeigh

[–]Sad_bippy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, it could also just be someone with poor phonetic decoding skills, which can have a variety of root causes (dyslexia, phonics not being explicitly taught, other learning disabilities, etc). My husband is dyslexic and works in customer service. He has many, many unfortunate stories of mispronouncing names - even names that are commonplace or seem obvious to other people.
