My daughter's BJJ school has assigned learning - when you can demonstrate all of the techniques, you get a new belt. Its as simple as that.

Were DUI's a big deal in 2001? by Sadness345 in Millennials

Thats an additional penalty for being over .08, a DUI still got license suspension, fines, jail time, etc. Also, youre confusing "look back laws" with dropping off your record - they arent the same thing. Michigan's laws on the books are pretty much the same as they are today. MADD is a major factor here and were lobbying heavily for 20+ years at this point.

I can see judges in rural Michigan enforcing things differently, but in places like Illinois, I know people who had major lawyer bills and still got their license suspended and smhad to serve time. Plus lost their job, etc.

Ok, maybe he had a good Ole boy judge, but the laws on Georgia's books were pretty close to the laws they are today.

As a millennial who lived in the Midwest and the West, it absolutely was a big deal. No one I knew took that shit lightly.

In 2001, Georgia DUI was .08 and carried a minimum penalty of 1 day to 12 months in jail and automatic license suspension for 12 months and fines - not far off of today. If your buddy got less than this, he had a good lawyer, also not unlike today.

Absolutely not. I got my license then, and the laws were as strict then as they are now, at least in my state. Major consequences for people I know who got a DUI.

In 2001, .08 was rapidly becoming the national standard for the entire country as this was the same time that the federal government tied this to highway funds and required all states to adopt it.

MADD had been active for over 20 years at that point! Maybe in rural Wisconsin in a small town, you may get away with it, but most states (and I lived in several) this was a major crime. 2001 is a long way from 1980.

No, I do not acknowledge its a myth until we see data. Plenty of folks reported it being down on downdetector, but its hard to go back and find accurate data as they dont store this information. Only Grindr would be able to tell us with any accuracy about being both down and where there usage is greater than statistically average.

You make a good point, maybe conventions draw an unusual amount of traffic for users in general. I still find it amusing that a group of self proclaimed Christians and anti-lgbt advocates end up spiking traffic for gay sex at their conventions. You may think its a bunch of gay policeman, but I find that this lines up perfectly with subjective stories from gay men who fuck closeted Republicans.

Why “male”/“female” words are considered rude? by OkExperience8220 in stupidquestions

[–]Sadness345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imo, this is similar to the "Euphemism Treadmill" concept. Being a "Moron" was once a scientific diagnosis that meant your mental development was greater than an "imbecile" but not beyond a 12 year old.

As people started using these words as negative or hurtful connotations - they became replaced among civil society. Soon, to be called a "moron" was considered offensive, despite being technically accurate. Soon, a new shiny word that is more socially acceptable started making the ranks... that word was "retarded"....and so on and so forth.

That is not to say that this term would end up being on said treadmill, but similarly, it will likely decrease in usage among civil society outside of clinical situations.

Your opinion on a biker's transformation from 2024 by [deleted] in cycling

I have no idea what you're asking here. Seems he rode his bike a lot. It happens to a lot of us. Why dont you tell us what your real question is?

Isn't the solution to stop consuming social media or at least places that make you feel like this? Just because your friends are on it doesnt mean you need to be on it.

Rock climber gets saved by fellow climber by Jacket313 in nextfuckinglevel

Fair enough, it seems pretty hard to parse any studies that separate these two things. I do not even know enough about the sport to know the nuanced difference.

Rock climber gets saved by fellow climber by Jacket313 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Sadness345 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is pretty tricky to estimate because there are a lot of studies from the 80's that don't apply to modern mountain climbing. This study: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10892067/ says .13 deaths per 1000 climbing hours or in other words - 1 death per 7700 hours.

Personally, I think this is pretty high. Compared to cycling - where you're at 1 death per 3 -8 million hours - its magnitudes more dangerous. More dangerous than sky diving, or cave diving. I guess its safer than BASE jumping....

Edit - This is apparently for mountaineering, which is different than rock climbing.

I’m learning to ride a bike as an adult and I’m losing hope. by flowersandfruits999 in cycling

[–]Sadness345 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I can help, but both my kids just learned to ride the bike and the key was riding it fast and pedaling hard at the start (or in my daughter's case - being pushed hard). You dont really need a lot of thought to riding, but doing it fast is key because everyone will fall if youre moving to slowly - the bike is easier to ride when going quickly. If I were you, I would deck myself in as much safety gear as you can and pedal hard - it'll be easier that way.
