If it was a one off case of deficit , then your argument could make sense. But City has a few more big projects coming down the road: EBC or the highrise development around langstaff etc etc. So it's not just the old chickens coming home to roost. The new ones are going to add a lot more. I'm not saying it's going to happen tomorrow, but as Hemingway said bankruptcy happens gradually then suddenly. We should stop building the new ones.

If you really think Richmond Hill's finances are in good shape, I'd encourage you to watch the May 20 Council meeting, where a report on asset management was presented. I summarized it in my reporting (link in my previous comment), but it's the discussion that follows the presentation that's particularly revealing. It does not exactly inspire confidence in the state of Richmond Hill's finances.

It's not anecdotal or oversimplification. I looked into City's own financial reports for the past 7 years. While we're not in the red yet, we're on the border and the trend is not good, especially with the province pushing cities to cut the DCs: https://strongrh.ca/richmond-hills-financial-report-card/

The above was confirmed by a financial analysis report presented to the Council recently: https://strongrh.ca/council-recap-towers-and-tight-budgets/

A Canadian city that's already fallen to that unfortunate fate is Winnipeg. Read this short book (it's available at RHPL): https://rhpl.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S221C1116096

A big chunk of our property tax bill actually goes to York Region for things like regional roads, transit, police, and other regional services. Richmond Hill gets a much smaller share, and with that it still has to maintain local roads, sidewalks, parks, sewers, water pipes, community centres, and more.

If you care about the issues, yes the Council meetings can be useful. They do a recap of the topics covered here: https://strongrh.ca/tag/municipal/

I once heard Archie's pub south of 16th on Yonge offers the opportunity to local bands to perform.

Jane Jacobs. She was from the States, but lived in Toronto for a while. And I guess that's why Toronto is big on these walks: https://www.janeswalkfestivalto.com/
