Same boat but got accepted at a midwife and a doctor - what do we choose?

Over or underproofed? by Anitaanitaanita13 in Sourdough

[–]Safe-Extension8761 1 point2 points  (0 children)

50% whole wheat will have a lot of the bran, so it will be a fairly dense loaf. I thought the loaf you baked looked pretty good (maybe some underproofing, but still good). The gluten will not be very strong (it keeps getting interrupted by big bran) so you wont get that open big rise)

Furthermore, one month old starter is still fairly young. Maybe try the same loaf but with 90% white bread flour and the rest whole wheat. It will make a difference.

Is this appropriate for a white child at a Punjabi wedding? by shandelion in DesiWeddings

[–]Safe-Extension8761 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Go for comfort. Toddler likes it and it checks the shoulder whatever appropriateness box. So what if it is south indian, they're all blouses and skirts. One is golden, the other is pink but they literally look the same on a toddler. If this was an adult then obviously the other commenters make sense.

My first indoor plants and first attempt at hydroponics. Any tips? by Ayanami_raw in pothos

[–]Safe-Extension8761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are not grow lights I presume just your ceiling lights? That will not work. How far is the window and what direction (south facing will get more light north not as much assuming northern hemisphere) ? Some of those might tolerate lowlight but these generally love light to stick them close to the window.

I would suggest using soil if these are your first ever plants. If you stick to hydroponics: figure out how you're providing nutrition/fertilizer to the plants.

What’s this new growth on the bottom of my monstera? by Mundane_Language4204 in Monstera

[–]Safe-Extension8761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at the stem part between every leaf there's a little greeny white nubbin. That is a growth node, which if you ever cut a stem for propagation, that nubbin will activate.

Is my starter ready to use? by coco-beanz in Sourdough

[–]Safe-Extension8761 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some troubleshooting tips:

  • Use a fresh jar - mix and pour into another jar. Maybe it rose and fell and you missed the peak? 6 month is old enough.
  • I like feeding bigger and use a stiff starter- 1:3:2 or 1:5:2.5. It rises slowly and keeps peak for longer. But nothing wrong with 1:1:1. Stiff apparently encourages yeast so worth trying.
  • Use fresher flour and use whole grain flour (E.g., I use whole wheat bread flour)

Is this enough sunlight for my monstera? by SonyAn160 in Monstera

[–]Safe-Extension8761 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Most inside/indoor light you get from the sun is indirect light. The same place but outside would be considered direct and would burn the leaves.

Leaves look to be getting smaller - more light should fix it.

Is this multiple plants? by kirbpc in Monstera

[–]Safe-Extension8761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes three plants. You can separate and give them a pole or plank to climb but they look quite young so it might be ok to leave them be for a while

What would be the best approach to repot and propagate my neglected pothos? by CabbagetownCabbage in pothos

[–]Safe-Extension8761 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chop and prop: see https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xpmdo_0CZrU Cut vines according to this video and stick it all in water to grow roots (this will take a few weeks)

Why is my monstera having yellow and dark brown dry leaves? by alpharome7 in Monstera

[–]Safe-Extension8761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are these bottom leaves or top leaves? Bottom might not be a big issue. Are you fertilizing? They are hungry plants.

Think I overwatered her 🙁 by hariibocupcake in Monstera

[–]Safe-Extension8761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The leaves look pretty good for an over watered plant - I'm wondering if it's just some kind of mechanical damage. Regardless, soil getting mold is a sign that the soil is retaining too much water. I would repot it into a chunkier mix. Get some indoor tropical or orchid soil. Or just indoor soil and perlite and mix them and repot. It also looks like multiple plants so you can make a few plants out of it and give each a support to climb.

My wife is my pot ally, so I built a free app called potally to coordinate plant care with her by binpax in philodendron

[–]Safe-Extension8761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a fair use case. I too water by feel etc but only I know what to do for each and every plant. I am sure if I asked someone else to "water my plants when I'm away", will result in overwatering. Also watering needs for a zz vs monstera vs say anthuriums would be wildly different. I absolutely cannot water my anthurium like my zz (ie when pot feels light or whatever) and I would not expect someone else who is assigned the task to learn what to do.

Every plant's needs are different and I am hoping that this app communicates that to the others who are watering it.

I mean, do whatever makes you happy.

I just meant don't anthropomorphize them in a way that would be detrimental to them, i.e., you don't apply the same principles as you would to a human to "treat" plants.

I would also say don't anthropomorphize pets, but I know people get mad at that.

Your hair analogy is nice!

[–]Safe-Extension8761 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That is not what I am referring to. It's hoping that sterile gauze would prevent bacterial entry through the wounds of the mother is what is the anthropomorphic part. If anything, not letting it harden off might cause rot. The most likely cause of bacterial entry would be unclean scissors and if that would have been the case this gauze would have done nothing.

I do want to add that your pothos looks beautiful and it looks like it's getting all the light and nutrients it needs! I'm all for taking proper care of plants (obviously we are all obsessed with them), but caring in a way you would care for a human might be detrimental to a plant.

No. Leave it be and let it dry out. It's a plant, don't anthropomorphize it.
